Interested to hear from ppl who managed to get into 350k-450k TC band. Hows ur wlb in the new role compared to ur previous one TC: 220k 8yrs
I feel wlb is very time and team specific. A entry level engineer in some competitive space like cloud may have more stress than a VP of a large maintenance mode project
Yeah high level IC like "senior staff engineer" should have low stress and good wlb. All it takes is the engineering skill and luck to get promoted to that level.
âAll it takesâ. Itâs literally âallâ.
Moâ money, moâ problems.
Comp depends on where you work. WLB depends on how organized the team and management are. I'm my case, WLB got better with moving to toss job.
Just more than doubled my TC to get to 450k. WLB is much much better. Coworkers are more intelligent. Less bullshit, less meetings.
Are you new to G?
My last jump was basically a doubling, and it reduced the stress. Moved to a bigger company with more people for coverage so more flexible hours. And the extra cash meant I could move closer to work, so less hours on the road every week. I am still nowhere near 400k, but whether or not a new role will be more stressful all depends on how shit your previous role was.
TC and stress have been pretty much orthogonal to each other in my experience. Anecdotes are not data, but the 400k year was quite stressful; 2M year was super laidback.
Better TC and lower stress now. WLB is great. Over the years, I feel that's been the trend. As I've acquired experience and knowledge there's less stress and higher compensation.
