Downtown Seattle

Settlers, I accepted an offer and I’m moving to seattle by September and I will be working in downtown. What areas would you recommend for me to look for a place at? I’m mid 20’s
I’m choosing between belltown, south lake, or Cap Hill. Which one is better? Or anything else?

Planning to walk, or bike to work. No car

How much money did you earn in Charlotte, NC and what money you will make in Seattle? In NC you could buy a mansion with $155K whereas in Seattle you will live in poverty with this TC.

I live very comfortably on 100k TC right in downtown Seattle. Don't be silly.

I’m in my mid 20’s why would I even want to buy a house now?

Why age is important? By renting you give money away, buy paying mortgage you invest in your property. Earlier finish paying mortgage is better.

You also don't take on the responsibility of maintaining a house or the risk if there was a housing crash.

Age is important because people are less likely to be settled for life in their 20s (location, partner, salary, life goals, etc) and the transaction costs on real estate don’t break even quickly (usually 5+ years of living in a home, often ++).

SLU is a cultureless corporate wasteland. If youre young and like to go out drinking, go to cap hill. If you’re looking for a more mature crowd, Fremont and ballard are like cap hill for grownups. Belltown is cool too but definitely a bit sketchier. Wallingford is cool but I don’t hang out there much and can’t really comment on it. I think it’s mostly a UW student scene.

CapHill is probably closest to your office and is the most affordable of the 3.

lmao these people thinking Belltown is sketch. Quit clutching your pearls, it's fine.

Whatever dude, I’m from Baltimore, and not Roland Park either. My sketchometer is finely calibrated, and starts to beep when I, e.g., see a homeless dude masturbating at a bus stop.

Well if you ever remotely experienced blues during winters or rains(SAD), just stay 2000 miles away from Seattle.

      It’s a very depressing place.

Sorry, but have to tell you. 70% of hirings happen during June and July in the Seattle area.

Is the hiring thing not true everywhere considering graduations?
      Jul 4
    • F5 Networks bhai-log
Nope. Do you think companies hire 70% as fresh grads?

Capital Hill is the most fun of those options. SLU is boring, but quiet.

Cap Hill if you’re gay. No real difference between belltown and SLU. Can’t speak of the violence in these community. First Hill if you want cheaper rent. Crime has likely shifted somewhat since I lived there. But I loved living in Belltown personally. But that was a different Seattle than now.

Alternatives: Eastlake, Westlake, Wallingford, south Queen Anne if you’re okay biking to work and want something quieter.

Can you tell why First hill is cheaper? I saw that but I thought there is something fishy

It’s near hospitals and boring. Also near the less desirable areas

More crazies there as well. Cheaper rent for compromises safety.

In addition to unsavory neighborhood chances are you are renting some random box in an apartment building (vs. townhome or house rental). If it snows, don't expect to get out for a week.

Yes! I was looking at it. I liked how close it’s but was wondering if it’s over priced? I was looking at it and Cirrus. Not sure which one to pick.

Avanti Apartments in First Hill is pretty good. Good combination of affordable+safe and close to downtown and your work. Don't come to Belltown it's getting seedier with every passing day.

Not belltown obviously, Southlake if you are boring. Capital hill is fine. Greenlake ideally.
