Dress makeover and recommendations for someone overweight

L6 SDM here (TC-400k+), male, coming to office in long shorts and round neck t shirts. I met my director for a 1-1 and he recommended me to dress like a “manager / leader” than an engineer since I attend many VP/svp level meetings and that impression will be quite critical if I have to grow to next level!
I was an engineer earlier and was quite surprised by the comment. Now considering the option I am still sticking to the org, I need recommendations on style of attire for someone overweight! I have been with Amazon long time (5+ years), moved from east coast (where I used to dress in business casuals). I have significantly outgrown all my dresses as I have put on 15+ pounds after joining Amazon ;(

What are some of the good reasonable cost brands I could consider for a dress makeover (I am frugal and would prefer something that is available in outlet malls and costs <$50 for shirts and trousers (separately). Married with two kids and non working spouse. Need to be frugal considering mortgage and expenses!

[i have see many directors / Vp in some orgs coming in shorts, but since my director has hinted this twice, I need to start planning for dress makeover, leaving org / hr etc is not at all an option please)

If you can afford it find a stylist to help you with a few outfits. Nordstrom offers this as a service.

And let me add. I would argue that spending some money on a few high quality classic pieces of clothing will be more cost effective in the long run. Many of the items I buy at the outlet mall fall apart after a season.

      What are your recommendations?
I thought if I lose the 15+ pounds, my old dressss will fit. So was considering outlet mall dresses as a good medium term option.

Why do you keep talking about dresses if you are male...? 🤔

Dude(dudette) - my director mentioned twice to dress like a “leader” and not an engineer in shorts!

Going to the gym will be more important to your career than getting new clothes.

I’d assume the “new style” comment your director is pushing you for is actually because he is not allowed to say “loose some weight, it’ll be good for your career”.

He has a bigger beer belly :-) and I have seen him gaining 20+ pounds over last few years (knew him for 5+ years in Amazon)

15 pounds is nothing...that’s like one size lol and why are you worried about being frugal when you make 400k. Money doesn’t travel with you to whatever afterworld, my friend.

What expenses are crushing you so much that a 400k TC can’t take of? You must have bought a house WAY over your means then.

House in Seattle (6k/month), private schools (4K/month) due to bad public schools! I am just breaking even on regular compensation except for the stocks I held for past 5+ years ($1.5m for retirement).

6k mo signifies that you’re at a 1.2M house, yeah? And if you have been there for 5 years, you have a REALLY nice one.

Anyways, doesn’t matter or change your situation. Nordstrom rack is really good — so is TJ Maxx. I’d just go try stuff on and find what you like. Go get sized up by people like at Nordstrom’s so you know your size and then go find some stuff!

Best of luck. I wish appearance wasn’t such a big deal with SLT, because I’m the exact same as you, but...it is what it is! The game must be played at all levels haha

Never hold off on buying clothes for weight loss. The weight loss is not not likely to happen.

Also plenty of people make far less than you and buy decent clothes. Spend $1000 on the upgrade and consider it an investment.

Most folks I work with gained 15-40 lbs in 5+ years with Amazon. Can’t blame Amazon but I need a medium term solution on attire while hitting gyms (I have)

      1. Hit the gym
      2. Buy expensive Jeans that goes for a long time. I bought 2 Diesel jeans six months ago, still looks awesome and worth the money.
      3. Start taking care of your clothes, being in a senior position you are expected to wear well ironed and fresh clothes. It’s not just about the style.
      4. Deodorant can make a huge difference.
      5. Get a haircut and fix your hair each morning.

Just spent some time on your appearance before you leave home every morning.

Fix the diet first. Without the diet the gym doesn't matter. For most people, intermittent fasting with keto lifestyle is the best jumpstart. After a month on the right diet, then you can add in the gym.

But you seriously can't keep with the same way of eating and add a gym routine with it, it will fix nothing.

Nordstrom is quite helpful in such situations. Schedule an appointment with a personal stylist. You’re not obligated to buy but you will get ideas from their suggestions what would work for your body type.

    Short term -
    - start with 5-6 shirts wear rotating, two trousers, formal belt, formal shoes (mark nason) - total will be under 1k if you shop from outlet.
    - wear formal attire on days when you have broader meetings and casual (short/ts) on non broader meeting. This will help you slowly transition over.
    - also make sure you groom regularly - invest in good hair cut every 3-4weeks.
    - mid/long term search for personal stylist, they work under a budget

Crap - i went to Brooks Brothers. The last set of trousers I bought were a 34 and I thought I am 38 . Looks like I am 42+ and because of the weird shape (belly heavy), the 42 sized trousers were quite gigantic/ loose everywhere. Ended up getting collared Polo T-shirts (XXL fits me pretty well) and some Levi’s. Hitting gym!

Please don't buy dress clothes that don't fit well or are obviously cheap. This is much worse than wearing shorts. Agree with the Dockers comment and a casual collared polo. Make sure to wear an undershirt.

Just for clarity, I don’t think you explicitly if you were male or female. You did mention dresses. In either case, people might have better advice or suggestions if they knew?
