if you like to smoke that good good while on the job, then it seems like dropbox design is the place to be

What majors do they look for, for new grad design?

Going to a top Design/IxD/HCI school will help your resume get noticed and will also increase opportunities of meeting a recruiter at your schools recruiting events. But after that I really don’t think anyone cares. The field is so new that designers come from a plethora of educational backgrounds as there aren’t many degrees related to the field out there. Your portfolio is what will speak volumes and will override any major/school you go to.

Your portfolio doesn’t mean crap unless you can convincingly socialize your work, decision making, and thought process.

I interviewed with Dropbox recently for a front end role and one thing I really liked about their mockups was that they added CSS styling annotations to them, which would make the life of any Front End Engineer so much easier. I guess they pay a lot of attention to detail. But I do think the redesign is horrible. They seem unclear of the purpose of their redesign and it looks like a mess. On the other hand, FB's design has improved tremendously over the years. Designers and UIEs (Front End Engineers) work together closely. We have a pretty awesome in-house component library designed by designers and built by engineers. It's really easy to use.

The appeal is that with Dropbox you're not just another small cog in a large machine. Design team is world class too. They're much smaller and mainly hire from the top 10 schools or really talented industry hires.
