Due for promotion but thinking about moving laterally

I am due for my promotion in next couple of months but I would like to move laterally in different team to learn new things. I am wondering if I move now , would my cureent manager still consider me for my promotion? With new manager,I doubt he will. I have read stories that new manager will look into the work after joining and then may consider.
