EA vs Blizzard: which is the better company to work for?

I’m interested in working in the gaming industry — and I’m wondering which company is a better place to work. From friends I hear EA has better culture — is this true? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each?

I hear Riot is nice. Beware of layoffs in the game industry. Working on games in a large company may not be what you imagine.

Can confirm that Riot is nice. One downside is that the office is in the Santa Monica area so cost of living is high or you spend a lot of time commuting.

Riot is nice but don’t be fooled by the culture. Same corporate BS you’d see anywhere else.

Lots of politics and it’s definitely an old boy’s club; hard to go too high up not as an original 100 employee.

Plus bonus structure is not tied very closely to personal performance so little incentive to exceed (cash bonus with very small upside compared to RSUs)

  • VeoD26, what's the deal with the "bro"? Have you met a lot of EA employees using that term or what? Been at EA for +8 years, have never hear it.. heard "dude", "man", never "bro"

EA only laid off 350 people. Blizzard laid off more. Plus, EA has Rootbeer rapper in the lobby so is obviously superior. Make Gaming Great Again #teamEA

I do enjoy EA, but to be straight on facts, we also laid off a large batch at fire monkies studio this year on top of the 350 Tuesday.

The internet only recently started hating us. They've always hated EA. If you're down with SoCal then Blizzard is where it's at. Although with all the news lately the morale is kinda on the low side. But we'll bounce back.

Epic leans toward hiring contractors to avoid these issues. I think we are 30+% contractor atm so no fear of layoffs. That being said...we are having a really hard time scaling up in a big way.. we are not built internally for hiring at a significant rate

Unionization has been a really hot topic at recent GDCs. Wonder if it will really gain momentum giving these stupid layoffs.

Pretty sure blizzard is not the greatest place to work anymore. The internet is hating on Blizzard for good reasons. It was poor decisions that created our 2018 and early 2019. I don’t think with our new leadership we’re in a better position to be successful for the remainder of 2019. Next few years are going to be rough.

In all seriousness, I agree with yyaaa, you should really love games if you're going into the games industry. It's awesome to get the free games, go to industry events, etc. but it can be volatile.

Not every game company gets free games but ya that’s a nice bonus if you do. Or work on a large tech company and get paid more to buy your own games :P

Also not every employee is given a chance to go to GDC or E3 or wherever. Only a few lucky ones.

I would actually be interested to know what gaming company doesn’t give their games to their employees for free... That’s pretty much an industry standard perk.

You get a free copy of the game you work on but after working on it for years, you kinda don’t want to play it anymore. Especially sports games. You working st EA, I highly doubt you get free copies of Anthem or Battlefield. You still have to pay (albeit cheap) for them.

If you are super passionate about blizzard games specifically, then Blizzard. EA is bigger and has more opportunities, more studios and locations. Culture at both is generally good.

I wouldn’t suggest either, but EA over Blizzard for company culture and mobility. You’ll be stuck in boring OC forever at Blizzard, working on the same live games the rest of your life. EA focuses on new and innovative. Activision proper or Sledgehammer would be nice, as would Ubisoft but their small in SF

It depends on where you live honestly. If you live or want to live in Anaheim go with Blizzard. If you want to live in Redwood Shores, Seattle, Austin or Orlando, work for EA
