I have interviewed for the Engineering Manager positions at Spotify, NYC. It will be for Machine learning and Data Analytics. Can somebody give insight what is it like EM at Spotify? What kind of freedom they have in decision making? Company culture? My total exp is 7 years in different companies.
Spotify ‘s EMs are people who manage people and don’t need to know anything about engineering part. Hence it’s going to be people decisions most of the time.
@wxup28 Interesting...then who does the tech leading for not so much experienced engineers? In faang Dev manager is pretty much involved in tech leading and ocassionally design and coding.
If you are lucky - you’ll have some engineers who can do it. And there are hierarchy of engineering committees to help with technical excellence. In general in Spotify it’s common when EM have no technical expertise to judge work or even do work of their direct reports. It’s changing in some parts of the organization, but as you can imagine there’s a ton of existing EMs who will never be able to adjust to faang ways of doing or be qualified for that.
What kinda comp does an EM at Spotify make?
+1, I think you should also post location as well. It should vary highly w.r.t location.
what did you decide?
Long term I predict that Spotify won’t be able to survive the intense competition from Apple or Amazon, who have a lot of cash to burn. So Spotify may not be there for long? Consumer market is very unpredictable, just look at Nokia , Skype etc. It would be a good place for a beginner maybe not for a experienced professional at this time in Spotify.
