Other things being equal (TC, good team, ability to be effective in either role), what would you pick? TPM career progression and role respect are dicey things, as well established in Blind. So my question is: would you pick EM hands down, or might you choose TPM for brand (or other reasons)? Please state reasons in comments. Projected TC say ~350. (I think this is becoming somewhat of a common mid-career conundrum these days).
EM. You can get to Tier company in a couple of years
No one hires EMs
What do you meant by tpm versus em? Technical project manager? Engagement manager?
SWE at tier 3
Underrated!
What’s the big difference between TPM and EM?
EMs are a made up job. They don't have any real role or responsibilities
An EM doesn't have to do anything. "Building a team" is not the same as "building a good team". How many EMs actually grow careers ? Good engineers get promoted or they leave. EMs don't do much. Most EMs only schedule meetings and try to talk as much as possible in them
TPM is never the answer if you can be an actual manager. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Why should one be an "actual" manager?
