Hi all, we are a very small, lean, self funded, startup and are looking to hire our first engineer/employee that I haven’t known from my personal life. What questions do you suggest I ask during an in-person interview? Any and all helpful suggestions/ideas are welcome. Thanks!

I wouldn't mix business and friendship personally. Even an acquaintance can be dangerous. As for interview questions; ask if they see the position as a job or a career. Their response can be very telling of their work ethic and mindset. Ask what changes they would implement to your existing business module. What can they bring to the table, aside from engineering skill sets, are they willing to wear multiple hats? (Team player, best interests for the company succeeding long term.) How they handle fires at work, give an example. Process and problem solving approach will be revealed.
Thanks for the suggestions! I really appreciate it
Good suggestions above. Since this is a startup and if you don’t have a ton of time for person to ramp up, ask questions in the related area, ask some hard or maybe even unsolved problem and watch the design or thinking process. I am guessing you want the engineer to hit the ground running.
