So today I was debating the pros and cons of east coast vs west coast with my friend. By east coast I meant boston/nyc and by west coast I meant The Bay Area. Having lived in both the places and having worked in teams in both the areas and considering other factors I am always pro west coast and these were my points: 1. More Tech companies and exciting startups 2. General work seems to be better in the west coast as compared to the projects east coast gets 3. Weather! 4. Better opportunities if a layoff etc happens 5. So many beautiful places just an hr drive away. The only con I could think of was the cost of housing. We were comparing 170k in the east coast vs 250k in the west coast. After worst case taxes east coast comes to 104k and west coast comes out to 145k ( no 401k etc). So a 41k pay difference is not that significant right? What other points am I missing? Someone who moved from east to west what are your thoughts on this?
West coast is definitely better for all the reasons you just mentioned. Plus, being able to change job anytime you want and not being stuck in one place means your salary will probably increase more and more in the long run, compared with east coast. Being stuck with one tech company means less competitive pay, less promotions because less job changes possible. I've even seen this case also become the cause of pressure to work more hours....
Generalizing entire geographical reasons based on just one or two cities is beyond stupid.
Better dating life on the east coast.
For women too for some reason even though women to men ratio is higher on east coast. I had better quality guys that actually were serious instead of dicking around and ghosting me.
I can see that. I think the shopping culture is more prevalent here on the west coast. Glad normal dating is still popular in the east coast. Atleast it’s slightly better for you here on the west coast than men. For us it’s like 1 girl for every 10 dudes. Hence, I see quite a bit of ghosting after amazing conversations. Struggle is real :)
SF is a garbage dump. You will pay $4,000 a month to have human feces and drug needles outside your front door. And it's only getting worse.
Wait.. isn't living in SF what millennials die for? Someone's garbage is somebody else's treasure.
NYC is the same. The only difference is that in nyc there’s a guy that opens door for you and expecting you to pay him tips.
Better transportation in NYC. No need of a car. Better food. All kind of restaurants are within walking distance from your office.
East coast least coast. West coast best coast.
East coast is more lively, better food, better culture, more authentic, more cosmopolitan. West coast is like white and Asian dominated culture, that’s it, and everyone acts entitled, even the homeless people! You give them food, they don’t want it, they want money.
Some pros of the easy coast : * No urban sprawl * Cities are actually dense. Thus, walkable. * Don't need a car, public transport is usually good. * Not a mono culture I am an Indian Male in software....and don't want to meet doppelgangers everywhere around me.

People are worse on the west coast. More fake. East coast people are more genuine and down to earth in my opinion.
Define who is the people? Americans, Hispanics, Chinese, Indians or all them? The ones in the office, the neighbor's, the ones in the street? I have not noticed anything abnormal myself.. maybe I'm part of them
I noticed this, too. People on East coast are more down to earth and more open with their feelings. People on west coast too PC to tell you how they really feel or they’ll just be passive aggressive and talk behind your back.
