Eating at Chaat House as a non-Indian...

Does everyone have to turn and look at me like I'm an 👽 from another planet just because I'm the only non-Indian there? It was super uncomfortable, especially hearing them saying and laughing about things in Hindi that I think were about me since they kept pointing and glancing over at my direction. Isn't this discrimination?

Also, would be nice if the menu was English-friendly, at least Chinese restaurants add English to their menus. I ended up just ordering what the last guy ordered, it was decent but definitely not like most Indian restaurants I went to.

Dude, the menu in any Indian restaurant is always in English. Because most of the Indians can’t read any other language except theirs and English. So I know you didn’t go there.

Also no one cares if you are white, black, red or orange. It’s a very funny post.

My bad. But it’s really strange if they don’t have an English menu.

Most of the desi crowd will not like it. You can leave a note or call the manager. Can you post the phone number? I will call them on your behalf.

u da real mvp, but I think next time I'll just order what Uber recommended above and also ask them to add English to their digital menu.

It sucks if they can’t have an English menu. I left Washington area or else would have told them in person.

It’s America and people should have an option to be able to read the menu in English.

Now I’m thinking what would you call ‘samosa’ in English. May be you guys are looking for descriptions/ingredients ? They might not have enough space to write it down on digital displays. You can always ask if you don’t know what it meant

I've never been there, but online photos show the menu is in English letters, but it's all Hindi (?) names for dishes. Meaning you're going to see "aloo" instead of potato and "gobi" instead of cauliflower and so on. It's unfortunate they don't have descriptions, but I'm sure Google can tell you what any of those are.

    Lol what is this? Yelp?

I have been to lot of Chaat house and I don’t think anyone would laugh at you if you eat there..

What location was it in? Also what did you order and how were you eating?

Chaat House in Bellevue, I don't know what the thing I ordered is called but it was like fried cauliflower that tasted like chicken, ordered to-go for obvious reasons.

      Chaat house is good for:

      Cholay bhaturay with lemon
      Mango lassi
      Dahi papadi chaat
      Bhel puri
      Pao bhaaji with lemon

      To name a few..

Rest everything else is mediocre and good when you are sick..

Sorry you had that experience Friend. I can fill you in on some chaat must-haves if you’re interested. Chaat is too good to cross off your list because of one bad experience.

Sorry OP that you had that experience.
Most likely they were curious to see a Chinese fellow trying out Indian chat food since it's not very common.
I am fairly confident they didn't mean to disrespect you in any way.
This happens more with FoB Indians and stops after they have been living in US for a few years.

Try samosa chat next time if you happen to go there again and you can also try dosa house (South Indian food) as it is less crowded.

How I understand it is that the menu was in English (which ought to be because English is the only common language among all Indians) but there were no descriptions? You are right, they should add the descriptions for people like you.

Sorry you felt like people were staring at you. It shouldn't happen.

When you say its not in English do you mean the name of the dish?

I know the menu in Chaat house in Bellevue and I can say the menu is in English. I myself can read English and only one other langauge (likelyhood of that appearing on a menu is 1/10000)

Either you are lying or mis-stating facts here.

It's written using English characters, but a non-desi could not understand what the menu items mean. If you don't believe me, just go google Chaat House Bellevue and look for a photo of their menu display. I would post it here for you, but Android won't let me save a screenshot of someone else's photo.

Exactly what I was saying. Its english. I'm from a different part of India and neither do I know many of the items. The only way is to ask or hope they write a short description of what it is down the line.

You work at FB should be smart enough to google translate, ain't?

so you want to make the argument that any language that uses the English alphabet / latin script is English? Por que?

Also, I didn't need to use Google translate because the server took his time to explain the menu for me, which pissed off all the Indians behind me in line.

FYI, Chaat is like Indian street food, you shouldn't expect the type of curry you're probably imagining at an Indian restaurant. It's a different category.

https://images.app.goo.gl/1uADWbfNTEac6uSV6 Looks English to me.. either way i don't go to that place as an Indian. Shitty place and always over crowded.. Food is average at best and the worst possible service.

Sorry you had this experience. I've never seen such behavior in that restaurant, but I mostly order Togo. I would understand if you felt uncomfortable being the only non-Indian, but if someone was pointing at you and saying stuff.. that's totally not acceptable.

It IS discrimination...and the people perpetuating it will go into insta-victim mode the moment someone points it out. And I'm Indian myself, so I know how it works
