Asking for an acquaintance. He's currently a senior manager at a major hardware (tooling) company, leading a couple teams (and managers). ~4 years there, with almost 20 years before that as an IC (with some lead positions) firmware/embedded software engineer at various places. Basically an expert with C/C++/RTOS/etc, but also semi-modern app development (did a lot of consulting in between). Not much web stuff, though. He's looking to move, ideally back to an IC role, but without taking a pay cut. Current TC is 190 base and ~60 bonuses (on average), plus a bit of other stuff. Adds up to ~255-260. Problem is, he's in LA (and not open to relocating), and there aren't too many companies with IC roles that pay that, especially for the kind of experience he has. Google, tiny Facebook office, and Snapchat (though I think Snapchat is a bad bet). Anybody else? How much should he be expecting to learn modern distributed systems architecture (beyond the basic principles) in terms of tech interview prep, and how much does that vary in terms of the level you aim for? I think he'd also be down for a "hands-on" management role if there was a good path to transition to IC down the line.
Western Digital in Irvine. Let me know if he wants to be refereed, we are hiring and storage pays well in embedded industry.
I'm guessing for a firmware engineer role? What would he be targeting (including TC)? The levels look a bit wonky.
Yes firmware. What do you mean levels look wonky? There are firmware engineers with experience all the way to 30 years in the storage industry, many refused to switch into management. Levels likely principal or technologist. Not sure about TC but would be definitely above 200k, I have seen 250k in the Bay Area for sure.
