Lots of L6 and L7 managers I have seen are too busy trying to climb the corporate ladder at Amazon. They are essentially building all their decisions around what will get them promoted faster, and that does not always align with what is needed for good business outcomes, leading to lots of politics, scope contention and duplicate work. My personal explanation is that this is a result of the relatively low TC compared to same league tech companies. Promotion is the only way to increase it. Skyrocketing stock price won’t last forever, and everyone wants to grab as much as he can as soon as possible. I’d like to know if this problem is as prevalent in Google, Facebook and other companies with higher TC?
This is not unique to Amazon. Believe me.
Why is this unique to L6 and L7? I see L4 and L5 SDEs in a hurry as well. It runs top down.
That is true. I just see that L6s and L7s managers specifically are the most damaging.

Every company has this.
It’s greed. No matter how much some people have, they always want more. At least amazon has the sense to have frugality as a leadership principle to prevent bidding wars.
Collecting bananas gets old so you need some other motivation. I think this is a natural progression in any large org.
How do you think they got to l7/l8?
By guiding their teams to fruitful outcomes?
The term 'empire building' seems too abstract, it's like hurling a pejorative, you may as well call them 'assholes'. What's the positive version of what you're describing? Waiting to be recognized and hoping your manager will see your good work and promote you?
