Equity & rise counter-argument

Hey guys, I have a question about compensation and equity: every time someone asks my boss for a rise he replies you have equity and your equity is growing so that's your raise, what is a good counter-argument for this? I am okay with my rise to be equity or cash Context: The startup is 3 years old and have 40 million in funding and doing good overall

Legitimate question and dick boss.

Also I am assuming they don't have a formal performance review process in place?

But your equity is growing on “hopes and dreams” it’s a startup. Look up statistics on startup success. It’s freaking dismal. Your boss is peddling hopes and dreams. PERIOD.

In the start-up world, equity is just paper money.

Ericsson Choongani Sep 24, 2019

In fact ask your boss if he’d trade you YOUR equity for cash up front. See his response. 🤣

Tell him, "Equity is not equality."

Cisco DeBruyne Sep 24, 2019

That's a shithead right there who doesn't even care to give you a decent reason.

Tell him it dosent pay the rent

When you got equity as part of your package you accepted the risk involved and now that risk you took has paid off. They probably told you it's going to be worth something (typically pretty optimistic valuation) and you agreed to that. What you manager says is only fair if he guarantees to compensate you when the equity goes down (which I doubt any startup will ever guarantee that).

Sounds like sexual harassment. I would never ask my boss for a rise.
