I was a Director of Engineering at a startup with 18yr yoe. I got my EMBA from a top university recently. I interviewed for L6 EM; however, committee pushed it down to L5 EM at the last minute. Not sure which interview, I didn't do well. I already finished the team matching stage. I am at a negotiation stage with HR. She told me that the high end rage for L5 EM is Mountain View, CA Base: $150-160K RSU: $250-260K / 4 yrs Target Bonus: 15% Isn't this offer the starting point for L5 based on https://www.teamblind.com/article/google-engineer---total-compensation-in-us---ultimate-post-jYcrij5X And https://www.levels.fyi/?compare=Google&track=Software%20Engineering%20Manager Also, I just got a call from Amazon for a similar role. To start the negotiation, I set the high expectation of 400+ TC as I was making base - $200k, $50k Bonus, and 100k options (may be worth $500k/4yrs) at the startup. Are they lowballing? Should I walk out? If so, at what range should I walk out? Should I tell HR about the Amazon? Is it better to take chances with Amazon? Thanks in advance!
This is low
Location ?
Mountain View, CA.
Daaamn homie, they are strapping it on, pegging you like a b*tch and asking you to beg for more with that offer. Interview at Amazon for L6 SDM and get 400k no problem.
That's a shit offer. Go to Microsoft you can probably get principal engineer
Get your Amazon offer and tell them they need to step it up. If they don't, then you must have really bombed an interview. I'd probably let go of the opportunity if they aren't willing to at least match Amazon.
I sure hope this is low. Doesn’t sound very competitive.
Director of engineering at a startup isn't really that high unless the start up is successful isn't it? I've seen founders of small companies go into Google as L4/L5. Don't know what their salary is though.
Is there a sign on? This is very low for L5
No. She said, sign on is not offered for standard offers.
If this is SWE ladder you can negotiate a lot more
Comparable comp for your startup is more like 250k. The options aren't liquid, so not really worth anything to compare with Google stock. That said, this isn't a fantastic offer. How many reports did you have as director? FWIW, there's not really a "last minute" for hiring committee.
20+ reports.
