Evaluate final offer Amazon SDE1 in Seattle

Got this final offer after negotiating

RSU: 41
Sign on bonus:$48000 paid over 2 years

Amazon TC over 4 years: $152k
Current TC over 4 years: $143k

Yoe: 3

Should I consider taking this or maybe apply for SDE2 next year?

    The amount engineers learn at Amazon in one year vs at Comcast will be magnitudes different. No offense to Comcast but this is true of almost everywhere that isn’t MSFT, FB, or GOOG.

      I’d honestly tell you to take a pay cut to work at Amazon. FWIW, I haven’t drunk the cool aid. This is not a nice place to work. arguably it’s a shitty place to work. Your work life balance will be worse. Your stress will be higher. And you will get woken up at night more times than you can count.

      Amazon is definitely a hard place to work, and not meant for everyone. But this is still the start of your career and working here will set you apart. It’ll set apart your resume, and set your skills apart as well.

    You were probably interviewed as an SDE2 this year already (YoE is more of a guideline for the max level to consider you for, in conjunction with the apparent quality of your past experience), and they down-leveled you because your design round(s) weren't particularly stellar, and/or there wasn't a lot of confidence in your leadership/soft skills. Doesn't mean you can't hack it; interview leveling is deliberately conservative.

    Personally, I would probably take it, coming from Comcast. It'll shore up your resume quite a bit and if you don't get promoted next year, you can interview around again (and nobody will bat an eye, given Amazon's reputation). Frankly, if you spend another year there and don't meet the SDE2 bar on your second attempt, it's likely that you won't get an offer at all--rating as an SDE1 after 4 years is about where the BR will start asking hard questions about your trajectory and growth potential.

    Also, as a team lead, let me tell you this: YoE is an incredibly weak metric for determining effective seniority (so you can and should safely ignore anybody who tells you that you should be such-and-such level based strictly on that)--and trust me, you do NOT want to be over-leveled in this company. That's how you end up with long hours and crippling stress.

    The good news is that the SDE2 promo is pretty easy to get these days, so you can safely assume you'll get it within a year and change (or even less) if you're performing well (and if you aren't, well...). On the other hand, coming in directly as an SDE2 will net you considerably more money: new promos go to the bottom of the band while outside hires get market rate offers. It may not be as high as median, but it'll still be ahead of where you'd be otherwise.

      I second this. Unless you plan to stay at Amazon for long term, don’t miss the chance to learn! The bar will be higher if you aim for SDE2 and won’t be considered for SDE1 because of no progression in 4 years.

    So it's better to join Amazon as sde2.
    If you join as sde2, means you are better than 50 percent of current sde2s (bar raiser round - every hire raises the bar) and given TC at median of the band or more ( like 220 ish).

    If you join as sde1 your tc after promotion to sde2 will be bottom of the band which is like 180 ish. And it will take at least 1-2 years.

    Btw, every sde2 raising the bar assumption is total crap and not true anymore. I wouldn't hire a lot of them even as sde1s.

    Having said that - in your position I would take the Amazon offer.

    Depends on your long term goals. If you plan to stay at Amazon long term, then wait until you can get in at sde2. If you're planning to stay a couple of years then move on to higher TC, then get in now, get promoted to sde2, and move on after a few years.

    106 base
    70ish signing, half at first paycheck, half over second full year
    65k RSU with vesting over 4 years 5/15/40/40

    My advice is unless you *need* this job, reapply and aim higher with your 3 yoe

    3 years experience should come in as Sde2. You can pass on this offer and reapply as Sde2. No point in changing companies and keeping the comp same. You will soon start regretting it.
