Evaluating offer Apple to Austin

I currently work in Apple in the Bay Area as a hardware engineer and I am evaluating an offer in Austin. The offer is 120k base / 60k RSU / 50 k sign on. The company is a smaller semiconductor company.

My Apple comp is 140k / 120 k RSU / 45k sign on.

I am considering moving because the quality of work I’ll be doing is a lot better and the environment seems to be a lot better in terms of technical and personal growth and a lot less stress. However the refresh yearly is not as good as Apple so long term financially I’ll be losing out. Is it worth it to give up financially at this stage of my career to learn and grow more. I have 3 years of experience.

Why not just transfer to Austin and stay at Apple?

The team that I want to work for doesn’t have any open positions in Austin. Also, internally transferring from the team I’m in can lead to them firing you if they find out. It has happened before.

      Apple doesn't encourage internal movements?

Not exactly. Some managers take it on their ego and if they get an idea of you trying to transfer they will let you go

The lower COL in Austin might make up for the lower RSU.

It’s lower, but still crazy high compared to anywhere else in Texas

If COL is the priority, that’s a very good offer for Austin. You could eat a 30% pay cut from the Bay Area and have plenty more in the bank at the end of the month.

Although Austin is getting much more expensive. It’s not like I was 5 years ago.

It’s a good compensation for Austin. I think you should push for 125 base. Assuming you’ve 5-6 years of experience based on current compensation ?

In that case this is a good compensation for Austin and for apple here. Did you spend all your 5 years in apple? I've 7 relevant and still base is lower than yours😥

I was in the semiconductor industry.. its dying (don’t go by the recent stock surge.. its cyclical) .. less stress yes.. but growth isnt compared to bay area.. with 3 yoe.. do u have an ms/phd in ee? If so with apple name you could go to google or fb’s bldg 8 division where the stress is much lower.. now ofcourse i assume here you care about Tc and growth.. and not cost of living so much.. :)
