Evil empire

Can anyone tell me what companies are good to work for? Individual is recent software engineering grad, conservative, with children. Hear lots of bad things in echo chamber about FB and GGL. Researching to find truth.

Don’t mix politics with work. Do your work, pocket that fat TC. Let the idiots echo all they want in the chamber.

It's more an issue of being socially responsible by supporting a company that doesn't mix politics (whatever agenda) with work. Making money is good, but doesn't always create value for others. Someone somewhere is programming an algorithm that will be used to recognize the face of an American citizen for the purpose of verification before eliminating said citizen via drone strike. Extreme example I know. An example none the less.

If you want to create value for others, go be a public school teacher and make 40k. Guaranteed impact on some kids’ lives. On the other end, maybe don’t work for Halliburton. Between those two, lots of grey area. Good luck figuring out the social value of every company.

If you say what you've heard about Google maybe I can tell you whether it's true

Are they working with the Chinese govt in creating a "big brother" type society? Are their search algorithms coded to push a certain agenda over another? Are the higher ups pushing to change internet protocols in order to create a DNS monopoly? What kinds of community outreach do they encourage their employees to participate in?

Google d3j88wq Oct 17, 2019

They were working on a censored and government monitored search engine for China, but stopped after there was employee and public backlash. No. I haven't looked into reasons for the DNS proposal. Not sure what you mean by community outreach - there is some encouragement to volunteer. In general it's a good place to work and employees are smart and thoughtful. This article summarizes the legitimate problems over the last couple years (but these issues don't affect everyday work for most employees). https://www.wired.com/story/inside-google-three-years-misery-happiest-company-tech/

From FANG, maybe Netflix depending on if you think trying to glue people to screens is evil. Everyone else experiments with consumer tech broadly, and some of this pushes limits. Others (we all know who...) flat out sell your information. More generally, the safest bets short of non-profits are pure B2B companies, since they usually have little interest in building privacy defying things with consumer data. But even there the sleeze catches up through sales, which is inherently incentivized to sell hard(er) because of fewer and bigger deals.
