Jumped ships. Had a 401k account with ex employer but with $0 in it. After few months of leaving, I got to know there was an contribution made in my account by ex employer. Few days later, I get a paper mail saying distribution of funds will take place since I'm no longer an employee and balance is less than $1000.

Don’t spend it, but keep it. There are laws that address this specific scenario. If this was in WA, my understanding is they have 90 days to fix it, or it’s yours. Speak to a lawyer for actual legal advice, because you can find yourself in legal strife over this sort of thing.

Keep it. Invoke: “Finder’s keepers” rule.
