Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
I'm at early stage of my career and keep hearing about this "corporate politics" thing more prevalent in big companies and to some extent in startups. I'm curious as to what are some instances of this people have seen/heard of. What to watch out for and how to keep it from impacting oneself. I don't want to be involved in it but would be good to be aware of the situations. Both tech/non tech roles' thoughts are welcome.
Ebay is no less.
Generally speaking, if someone promises thing to you, get it in email or a ticket or some form of writing. If they reneg, change their mind, go back on their word or try to screw you over, you have some proof. (This is especially important if you did something for them initially).
Often times for political reasons you have to choose a sub-optimal strategy - beware of this and be prepared to do what you disagree with and you should be fine
VMware gang have made it the worst at Uber.
I heard about this. Can you share more history on this
CTO(?) was from VMware and hired all his gang
Getting promoted because you're well liked vs performance. Just be friendly to everyone, show your value and work your ass off and you'll be fine.
Ppl who deserve the job and would be better not getting promoted because they don't kiss the correct asses is almost more annoying. I have seen a lot of great people leave because of that.
Taking on projects for the sole purpose of making another team/org happy, rather than progressing the bottom line or actually improving things.
At first, I didn't understand what you were saying, but then I noticed you're in LinkedIn, so you'll see a lot of this. We're more on the other side of this equation, and it feels bad and is not as simple...
To me company politics essentially boils down to multiple forces at work. Some forces align well to your objectives while others might not. One thing to note is everyone is working towards their best intention of where the company needs to be. Whether it be right or wrong is not for you to determine. Important thing is to manage the forces and hopefully they don't run you over.
My young padawan, corporate politics is nothing more than being the person that takes and gives credit to those you think are worthy. Choose those people wisely.
Nah, bro. You're just jelly cuz you ain't up there. There's a reason a person moved up that food chain. You don't know what they sacrifice to get to where they are in life. We all judge others on their actions and ours on intentions.
Also sacrifice others for their own gain.
Join Cisco and you will become a veteran in politics in months.
What kind have you seen there
@coca he will also figure out that the only "kind" of politics that exists, is power politics.
