Exclusive: U.S. tells India it is mulling caps on H-1B visas to deter data rules - sources

Two senior Indian government officials said on Wednesday they were briefed last week on a U.S. government plan to cap H-1B visas issued each year to Indians at between 10% and 15% of the annual quota. There is no current country-specific limit on the 85,000 H-1B work visas granted each year, and an estimated 70% go to Indians.

Here is how this has gone down in the past -

US banned export of supercomputer to India - we developed our own supercomputer.

US banned missile tech to India - we developed our own.

US banned cryogenic engines to India - we developed our own.

So nothing to worry this time.

@bhai-log you forgot the navigation system NAVIC. US denied access to GPS during Kargil we built our own. And many more things. But your point well taken.

Moreover, by caping H1B they are not solving any problem. The jobs will move to India. Talents will stay in India and prevent Brain Drain. Students will stop coming to US because working in US is the only reason people come to US for studies to US.

No problem. It would help jobs and companies to move out of US. Let other countries grow.

Great, India gets to stop the brain-drain. Prospective international students will go study elsewhere. IT outsourcing industry will hire US citizens for client-facing work and go about its business as usual. US tech and medicine will face talent shortages and increase anti-Trump lobbying. I can’t see how this is a “threat” to India

Brain drain will never stop. People will find some other destinations. India is 12 times more densely populated than the US, and Mixed economy favors everyone in the food chain. The chaos is untreatable.

I think brain drain will slow down a lot. Canada, Australia, and EU do not pay as much as US. A lot of my Indian friends would rather go back to India than move to those places. If startup boom continues, the salaries* are going to keep pushing higher

Edit: referring to Bangalore startup scene ofcourse

GC per country cap already there. H-1B visa per country cap in discussion. If current ruler & his administration lived for another 4 year term, there will be L visa caps too. Illiegal immigrants are more important than well schooled legal immigrants. Legal family member's immigration were labelled as chain migration. None of this benefits US economy sitting on top of 350 million population while a significant portion of revenue is generated by tax paying legal immigrants. Corporations should work on creating second HQ & stock trading in other countries. So much monopoly by one single superpower country.

I honestly prefer this to waiting in gc backlog after establishing a home here. If rejected early in the process, you atleast go elsewhere or stay home.

Buying a home with gc backlog is an informed decision with the worst case and best case already imagined. Crying on it later makes no sense.

It is. But we are humans. You cannot live in a place for years without getting attached. That and being ready to leave at a drop is not a great combination. Atleast for me and am sure there are others.

Did they bribe another US official again? Or is it another case of poor contractors monitoring fb and Instagram posts who got crazy after viewing 10,000 murder photos per day ?

This can become very good for Canada. Didn't get picked for US lottery, ok lets get you canada visa. Relatively less TC but close proximity to US.
With no solution to the bodyshops hogging all the Visas, some alternative measures have to be applied.
I don't think this will lower the chances of people wanting to study at top universities, but the number from certain part of India would certainly reduce and I for one would be very happy for that.
Moreover, this will be an opportunity for those already working in US to enroll in quality MBA/MS and get hired. All of this is because of WITCH companies, someone has to suffer.

If this happens (massive migration to Canada), it will lower TC even more. Eventually there will come a time when it is better to live in Bangalore, and that is when India can finally have a good engineering company.
      Jun 20
    • Marvell elkdead
there will be no massive migration etc and no TC will also not go down, I dont’t see why. India doesn’t need people coming back from US or anywhere to establish new companies in india, there are far too many startups in india, and a lot of them doing well and paying well too. Those earning in dollar cannot fathom the thought that so many in India are already having a great lifestyle already by virtue of low cost of living and working with great companies.

Yet we see flood of Indians desperately trying to live in other countries and staying even when there is no chance of getting a permanent residence. Why? Also wage goes by market. More supply means lower salary. Canada is full of students from Waterloo and Toronto and what not. Canadians are way more interested in engineering than Americans. When you add thousand more engineers coming over to Canada, the salary goes down as job growth can’t keep up with it. US is the only country that pays well for software engineers. India is kind of well paying country if we consider that software engineers in India are paid 15 times more than average Indians.

You’ll get the answer to your question by a simple search of number of engg colleges in india and number of graduates each year passing. They first become cattles in search of jobs at bodyshops for a meagre 200000lpa INR. Then they do everything possible to come to US (but still live a beggars life but that beside the point). Compare that with someone getting into FANG/unicorn. Before comparing average indian’s salary, read about an average american’s salary and their saving and their debts. Avereage american or indian is not software engineer, nor do they want to, its only software engineers who feel entitled to get 15times more than an average indian/american.

I don’t get your point. GDP per capita is a metric commonly used to gauge the economic wealth of individuals. India is at around $2,000 which is on par with Pakistan and Vietnam. You don’t see this of course because you grew up in a wealthy neighborhood (by Indias standards). So many people are in poverty and will work for 10 times less salary than software engineers in India. I am not comparing to Americans here.

What is it about Americans savings and debts? If you are going to argue about happiness etc, economy doesn’t correlate to happiness. Heck N Koreans or South Africans could say happier than Americans or Swedish. US GDP per capita is around $50k. Yes living cost is higher. Thats why I said software engineers in India are relatively paid well. They may have much better life than software engineers in US. At least that was how I felt when I was in Bangalore - they are happier than Indian engineers in US. They dress much better as well. So my point was that if huge influx of Indians to Canada happens, the wage will go down even more for Canada and it may not be worth living there. They will be better off living in India.
