Many companies uses hackerrank/coderpad where you can run/test your code. What do interviewers expect ? A flawless code passes all test cases ? Or ok to have some syntactic bugs but proper logic ?
It's okay to ask if they care about correct function names/perfect syntax but if you don't know assume compilable. But don't spend too much time on syntax if that means spending less time on important things like analysis and big picture and correctness

I've had phone screens weeks apart with the same company where one expected me to run my code, and the other didn't. So I think it's safe to say it's dependent on the interviewer.
