I'm wondering about total comp for a sr. Software engineer in the Bay Area with 6 years experience. I'm trying to decide if it's worth moving out there or if I should stay in Austin.
Bay Area is pretty costly so it really depends how much hike you are getting it should be at least 60-70 percent hike I guess to survive
Depends dramatically if you're an A class or B class engineer. If you're B class, the higher cost of living in Bay Area makes it probably not worth it. For A, definitely move.
what is class A engineer
I'm leaving Austin for the Bay Area right now, ended up getting ~3x total comp. After col it's closer to 1.5 or 2x but it's still nice. Plus I have a lot more room to grow, technically and in pay.
"Closer to 1.5x or 2x but it's still nice". Still nice...
~3x would def be in my range. Good to know, I've been strongly considering moving out I just didn't want to waste interviewers time if it wasn't likely to make enough to make it worth moving out.
the biggest qol decline for me is going to be commute time, going from 10 minutes to 45-60 minutes is brutal. I'm hoping to counter it with the income nuking down my student loans faster and giving me the chance to actually build some savings
