Expedia vs Amazon

I have an SDE(MLE) 2 offer from Expedia with TC: 200K and an SDE 1 offer from Amazon with TC:160K. I really like the team at Expedia and what they are doing. Given the unpopular opinion about Expedia not being a good tech company should I still consider Amazon or should I just go ahead and choose Expedia. I can not negotiate with Amazon as the offer is from the student's program. I am an international student and will require an H1. Keeping the tech and visa in mind will I be at a disadvantage if I choose Expedia.

SDE 2 vs SDE 1.

If you're going on H1 choose Amazon. Looks better for your future and will get you more people to sponsor you in the future. If Expedia will sponsor and give gc then I'd go to Expedia

Yeah op could also go back to their home country and still earn decently if they work in amazon there

You my friend would be a great product manager!

Amazon might be have better 'prestige', but I'd say never sacrifice career progression (and desired career specialization such as ML work especially) for perceived prestigiousness. Someone else mentioned that it may look better for future sponsors if you choose Amazon, and while I'm sure it's possible, imo it's not worth giving up the Expedia offer.

@OP had work exp. outside US? How did you prep for the interview? What kinda questions did they ask? Thanks.

Amazon wOxp85 OP Nov 27, 2019

Yep, the work exp is outside the US. The offer from Amazon is an intern conversion so the process involved couple of online coding tests and a remote coding interview. The Expedia offer is for the Machine Learning role. There were around 6 rounds most of the rounds involved both coding and NLP(the team is more NLP oriented) and ML in general. Questions ranged from straight technical know-how to system design for the usual software applications and the ML-based ones.

Thanks OP. How many years of exp? I am more interested in their NLP/ML related questions.

Clarify the GC process in both cases. Previously, Amazon would not start your GC process until you get to SDE 2 which will be like in 2 years if you successful.

Amazon wOxp85 OP Nov 27, 2019

Thats the policy with Amazon even now. Expedia offered GC on day 1.

Amazon dayafter1 Nov 27, 2019

You will need to make a choice how GC is important for you. I worked at the tier-2 company for 5 years to get my GC and then I was a free bird. It was not bad at all but could be somewhat better. I think now it is even less strict and you could change jobs in the middle of the process. I would go with Expedia if I were you for GC reasons. I worked there, it was not bad at all. You could learn more from Amzn but it is a meat grinder, Expedia has a sane WLB.

Expedia sponsors GC instantly after your manager's approval. So i think for immigration purposes Expedia is better. If i were you i would also negotiate GC as part of this

Amazon wOxp85 OP Nov 27, 2019

Expedia did offer GC on day 1.

What's your Expedia comp breakdown?

Amazon wOxp85 OP Nov 27, 2019

140 base 35 sign on 12k relocation 12% year-end bonus and 20k RSU.

Expedia Group e5menow Nov 27, 2019

It's not really 200k. You don't include relo and signing as part of your TC. Also Expedia doesn't always give 12% bonus. Especially with this year stock plummet you won't get 12%

How many years of work experience do you have?
