Can anyone share your experience of working in Japan, especially in Tokyo? I am thinking about transferring to Japan because I have been a fan of Japanese culture since high school. No kid and no family to raise. Wanted to see the world when I am still young. But on the other side, I don’t know if this is a good decision for my career growth. I don’t know Japanese and don’t know how hard it will be transferring back to US (I am not a US citizen). Appreciate for any advice!
You can easily live in Tokyo without knowing Japanese. Culture wise, many things are different. Example: it's a very top down hierarchical society at and outside work. People dont confront or disagree to someone superior. This gets a bit frustrating for outsiders. However, people in general are very polite.
you mean without knowing Japanese?
What are your favorite monogatari and koto pieces?
lol
Do you get a pay adjustment on the transfer?
Life in Tokyo's pretty great. Amazing food and culture, friendly people, clean city. You will obviously be a lot more comfortable if you speak japanese but in Tokyo you can get by with english only. You'll probably take a pay cut compared to the US (10-30% less depending on company from what I've heard). If you work at Amazon or other American tech company you will still be earning a lot of money for Tokyo and be able to afford quite a nice lifestyle. If you're early in your career you'll find opportunities for growth everywhere; I wouldn't take that into consideration.
Someone is looking for some Asian persuasion.
Is that transfer easy? I'm considering offer from Amazon. Heard it's easy to do international transfer for G and F but never heard anyone from Amazon go international
Just don't bring your waifu pillow.
