Hello, I've worked retail the last 10 years. I am finishing a degree in computer science and the end of next year and want to get an internship for summer of 2020. I would like to work as a software engineer. What are some things I can do now to get ready to start applying for internships? How can I help myself get selected for an internship?
to get ready, you can turn on your computer
So once my computer is turned on and get ready to apply. What should be my focus? Side projects, volunteering, GPA, networking? How can I best position myself ?
side projects and networking definitely
Leetcode.com is popular these days, good way to try coding your way through problems you might be asked to solve in interviews.
I've added that to the list and will work through them and practice white board coding! Thank you!
For the companies that you listed, Amazon is pretty easy, you just need to apply online. Google/Facebook, you might need internal referrals and definitely leetcode. Also your school (CS T4) or previous experiences are also helpful. GL!
Great thanks!
Career fairs. Talk to recruiters face to face rather than getting rejected by an algorithm because you didn’t put the right keywords in your resume.
Great! Is that how you landed a position or is that how where you work recruits?
That’s how I landed a few interviews and my second job. Although some recruiters will direct you to apply online, usually they’ll mark the resumes they received that really stood out. Get a business card from them in case you get rejected by the online process or don’t hear back. Follow up once a week until you get a no from the one you talked to in person.
Make sure your LinkedIn is well written and always updated. This is worth more than applying. Even with the “Let recruiters know I am looking for a job” button off I get 5-10 recruiters a week emailing me. LinkedIn was how the Amazon recruiter found me.
Oh nice! Any keywords or things that you did that you think helped a lot?
Having GPA 3.0 or above helps a lot if you have it, and any extracurricular activities or volunteer work is big
Great thank you!
