Never bought a piece of jewelry in my life but now that I’m in a serious relationship, I see that my gf likes gold jewelry. When I walk into these jewelry shops, it’s quite intimidating. I just don’t understand why people want to pay so much for jewelry and wear it. Serious thoughts appreciated
I don't understand why people pay so much for cable subscriptions and watch it.
Stop thinking. Buy her jewellery. Gets you laid
IMO ask your gf this question.

just be thankful gold doesn't depreciate.
"I love how your eyes light up when you receive a new piece of jewelry. Tell me what it's like? What feelings and emotions do you feel when you first open the box, when you imagine wearing it, when you show it to your friends?" The more you learn about what fires her up, the more you can trigger it in all sorts of other ways as well. Anthropologically, it's probably just a status symbol, or some shit. But that part isn't that important. Using this as an opportunity to get to know her more deeply is.
My favorite pieces of jewelry have memories associated with them, and make me think of the people who gave them to me, or vacations I went on where I bought them, etc. I think that's a big part of what makes jewelry special - your gf will think of you when she wears it.
People have been adorning themselves for "forever". Hard to say what gold jewelry means to her. Seems like a good opportunity to find out more about her and her values. In the meantime, you've probably figured out her style. I'm sure you'll pick out something nice. If not, you can always window shop with her and spontaneously buy her something she likes. Very romantic.
Many women appreciate jewelry because receiving it as a gift and wearing it makes them feel pretty and special. You said walking into the stores is intimidating, so don’t. If you’re going to buy jewelry, look around online at reputable sites and buy from them... Your gf will appreciate the jewelry and your wallet will appreciate some savings vs. brick and mortar jewelry stores. I’ve bought the majority of my wife’s jewelry (thankfully she doesn’t really care much about jewelry, which is a win for me, but she wants what she does occasionally wear to be top notch and classy) from Blue Nile. In particular with them, they do a kick ass job of identifying diamond quality on a per item basis and allowing you to search and filter for exactly what you want. Her engagement ring has two imperfections that are invisible to the naked eye and barely visible under magnification, but kicked the rating down slightly and made it cheaper on top of the savings incurred from not buying from a store that has to pay salespeople and rent.
