I got a verbal offer recently, and the recruiter told me once they send the paperwork I have 24 hours to sign. What can I do to push back and get more time? They say it's company policy. The company isn't a startup (public company).
What's the company?
I would rather not say until I get the written offer
Its BS. If they are decent they will give you more time. Run away.
Follow up - should I tell the company I have an offer with that I got this offer, or should I wait to hear back from my other interviews and negotiate with those offers
Just tell them you have a couple of competing offers and you would like to have adequate time to review options with your significant other (wife/kids/cat whatever)
I was given 48 hours to sign by Microsoft 6 years ago. I told them to have professional courtesy and shamed them into extending to 1 week. That 1 week resulted in me getting 6k more base, 6x stock and 20k cash bonus from Msft with a competing offer.
There is no such company policy. This is a standard HR trick.
"so all your employees are easily bullied into making snap judgements on serious decisions? Sounds like a great place to work."
Usually you get a few days to ask your wife, 24 hrs is a wtf that you can tell them no and don't bother sending you the offer. I can see limiting it to one week so you don't shop around. I tell my recruiters if they pull this on me I'll sign and may decline later, and would cost them more, their choice.
Why shouldn't candidates be able to shop around? It's not like employers don't shop for candidates. Sure, don't make it a totally open-ended offer, but a few weeks isn't unreasonable.
I am not saying it is right or not, it is just common practice these days. You have a number in mind and you do some pre written offer negotiation before the official offer is out. Recruiters doing his or her job will communicate that before deciding to send an official offer out. If you are not told verbally the number before the official offer is out, and only got 24 hrs to think about take it or leave it, it is guaranteed to be a low ball that is trying to take advantage of you.
I agree with the post above
If this is the job you want, take it. If you are not sure, and you indeed are sitting on another offer, what do you have to lose by asking them to wait? It is very low risk. If they expire the offer, you are seeing how very little they value you.
How much time you need?
Ideally until my other offer expires in about 3 weeks. That would give time to wrap up other interviews
I think that's totally fair. Tell them that, then walk if they won't play ball.
