External E7 or D1 engineering hiring at Facebook
How common is it for FB to hire a director of engineering or senior engineer E7/8 externally? At least most of the directors of engineering look like they are promoted internally ? For all the new engineers in FB do you have anecdotal data if your graduating boot camp class how many engineers are directors or E7/8s?

I’m interviewing eng dirs now. It happens, but historically less than internal promotions (that’s changing though). E7s candidates we’d definitely roll out the red carpet for.
6+ is not mainly about tech skills. it is about relation. external candidates ususally have no trustable relation
