External offers to increase level/compensation for current job?

Anyone have good success increasing their level/compensation at their current job with an external offer? If so, how did you go about doing so?

For me my manager somehow found out that I'm interviewing.. guessing someone from the companies that I'd interviewed must have told. So he called me one evening, discussed about this and asked me the reason.. I told compensation as one of the three reasons and he instantly agreed to do it. Got 10% increase, but that was still lower than my offer external.. he said he will try to, and thats in progress.. ill be hearing from him this week.

I had a hunch my pay could be higher. I told my manager I'm planning on gathering some information on my pay by doing some interviews. I came back with a number and context that I really liked my job. They more than matched. The end.

Netflix is known for being generous

Yea, Netflix is the exception. I wish more companies were like them. Most managers wouldn’t react positively.

I heard of people doing it in my larger team. The opinions I heard and read here as well were that it’s not good because the team will think you’re a flight risk, but I think it’s fair game if you’d stay for a higher pay rate.
