FAANG and MSFT

How does Microsoft compare to the traditional tech giants in FAANG? Primarily interested in prestige, is Microsoft seen as lesser in talent and reputation?

Less than FNG, more desirable than Amazon I think, not sure how it compares to Apple

Microsoft YsTJ07 Jun 5, 2019

It depends. If you want WLB, msft is better if you want money, impact, learning, growth then Amazon is much much better...

Amazon zAUt44 Jun 5, 2019

Who told you that?

Alibaba gdruje Jun 5, 2019

Definitely lesser in telant but reputation depends

Lower TC but people tend to rest and vest here with great wlb at our country club. Prestige is OK? I still get poached by FAANG companies

Microsoft YsTJ07 Jun 5, 2019

I've actually heard that FAANG recruiters avoid 63-65 bands at Microsoft because they know they won't pass the loop...

Smart recruiters

It's certainly respectable, and while the average team or developer there isn't terribly impressive, some orgs/groups are downright excellent (MSR should be obvious, and there are pockets of really excellent senior people lingering from Microsoft's glory days 15+ years ago). It's just not very attractive to experienced candidates because their compensation is notoriously poor in the general case. Any candidate capable of getting into any one of the other giants will usually choose the latter (even Amazon), because there's almost guaranteed to be a large TC disparity. You'll routinely see SDE2s getting $50k or 80k on-hire equity grants, while everybody else in the group you mentioned is giving that to college hires, and offers anywhere from ~2-4x that to their mid-level candidates. Strangely enough, they're a lot more competitive (and attractive) in the university hiring scene. Consequently, Microsoft loses a lot of recruiting battles and is heavily poached by just about everybody.

Msft is giving up the 61-65 rank, it's a lost generation. Only the incompetent or lazybones stayed, the bet is on the next generation

Maybe used to be the case that MS was seen as less prestigious, especially in the Ballmer days, but I think the tide is turning. In our org we just had 4-5 ex-Googlers join, lots of ex-Facebookers too. Google is going the way of old MS, and MS is becoming the new Google. Facebook is Facebook, and while it might be prestigious, the bad press and privacy issues are stressful.

What org are you in

Microsoft timus Jun 5, 2019

What org are you in? I don't see that happen around in my org O365.

Dude, really? “traditional tech giants”?!?!??? Microsoft and Apple were ruling the world when the rest of these company’s CEOs were shitting in their diapers. Also, MS is a much larger, more valuable company than F or N. They’re the biggest dog in the yard. Prestige? Who cares! Go make money and live your life.

Alibaba gdruje Jun 5, 2019

No one is making money in MSFT

Microsoft megamanX Jun 5, 2019

My TC is $350K, I consider that making money. If you’re making a Million, good on you... but it’s absolutely on par with Amazon, Apple, and Google

Microsoft Caezure Jun 5, 2019

It’s way more giant for one.

Microsoft biggysmall Jun 5, 2019

MSFT is the most valuable company in the world. No prestige? gtfo

Amazon Beff-Jezos Jun 5, 2019

No offense. But yea no prestige...

Microsoft is trying hard to become a better tech company and Amazon is trying harder to be Microsoft. Let’s see who wins. 🍿

Alibaba gdruje Jun 5, 2019

No offense but it's a lot easier to become MSFT than become a better company.

Amazon SeekingHLP Jun 5, 2019

None taken. So you are saying Amazon will become Microsoft much before Microsoft becomes a better tech company. May be I agree. You never know, by 2025, Amazon will be better (pathetically political) than Microsoft ever was.
