FANG | 400LC | Top 10 LC | 100% Offer Rate | Looking for Referrals

Hey guys, I'm looking for new grad referrals 😅. First, a little bit about me:

- Grinded LC + CTCI + EPI for over 1 year straight. I grind LC during class, on the toilet, after midnight, while on the phone. I even tried to do it in the shower once. Overall, 400 LC completed (75 Hard). Before you ask: Yes, this includes LRU Cache and trapping rainwater.
- Top 10 on 2 LC competitions, Top 50 on several more.
- ~1900 Codeforces Rating, grinded CF for about 6 months as well.
- For every company that I have gotten the initial recruiter contact, I have gotten all the way to the offer, 100% of the time. This includes Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Bloomberg.
- Have multiple side projects across different technologies (Backend, Mobile, Web w/ React, Machine Learning). Have won 2 hackathon awards.

I'm looking for referrals for Software Engineering positions (new grad level). I'm most interested in:

- Unicorns
- Promising Startups
- Quant Companies

Thank you for reading and if there is anything I can do in return, please let me know!

Stupid question: how long does it actually take y’all to solve 1 LC hard?
    Sep 4 5
    • Google LC4LIFE
      OP
I can do a typical LC Hard (4th question on the LC Weekly Contests) in about 8-12 minutes. However i have tons of competitive programming experience due to grinding Codeforces and similar websites, so I definitely don't think that is the expectation during interviews haha.

    • How did you improve in CF? Did you upsolve a lot?
      Sep 4
    • Google LC4LIFE
      OP
Yeah, I would take a Div 2 virtual and then upsolve every problem I didn't get. One important thing is that you time yourself for each problem and then force yourself to look at the solution after 30-45 mins. Competitive programming has many more "problem types" than leetcode so it is often the case that you didn't even know the technique to do the problem in the first place. I find that forcing myself to give up on a problem after a set time interval prevents me from wasting too much time on problems I could never solve without knowledge of the underlying technique in the first place.

What do you mean by “upsolve”?
      Sep 4
    • Google LC4LIFE
      OP
It means going back to unsolved problems and solving them. Sometimes people also say upsolve when referring to going back to a problem that you were unable to solve in a contest due to time alone (but if it were not for the contest ending, you would have been able to solve it).

why not do ur own startup
    Sep 4 10
    • Bloomberg Enig16
Actually, gehjbf is correct. If your goal is to do a startup in the future, joining a Corp would be wasting your time. It’s a fallacy to gain experience at a large company and think it’s helpful for a startup. If you want to start a startup in the future, joining a startup would prove most valuable.

That’s not always true. Many teams within big companies operate like startups. I’ve been working exclusively on greenfield undefined projects and had the opportunity to drive the vision, the product, and the tech. That being said I don’t know anything about the operational side of things, but I can imagine that can be learned through books, videos, seminars, and friends. OP is clearly self thought.

@OP if you need a 10x engineer once you start your own thing ➡️🙋🏻‍♂️

My output is in the hundreds of thousands of lines per year.

      Sep 4
    • Bloomberg Enig16
Lol I love it when people say their team inside a large corporation is like a startup. It’s not even close. And are you serious the operational side of things can be learned through books, videos, and seminars? Like reading books like “the lean startup” can make you ready? I’ve talked to numerous founders of actual successful startups and even unicorns, and they all same the same thing. If your end goal is a startup, join one now - there is no other way to gain the experience needed elsewhere.
      Sep 4
    • Bloomberg Enig16
Startups aren’t just about the vision, product, and tech. There are so many other things involved that decides whether or not it becomes successful. You can have an independent team in a large corporation that drives its own product, but to say it’s like a startup is a fallacy.

I’ll ask the important question here: if you have gone all the way to the offers at FANG, does it mean that you are looking for referrals at Unicorns, startups and quant companies? Because you must already have offers from FANG.
    Sep 4 1
    • Google LC4LIFE
      OP
Yeah, definitely interested in those companies! I'm also interested in (relatively) smaller public companies like Snap and Dropbox.

Yeah i already got offers from FANG haha.

So for how long in your lifetime were you into competitive programming/learning to reach this level?
    Sep 4 7
    • Google LC4LIFE
      OP
I definitely wasn't inherently good haha. I could do about 50% of easy level questions when I first started. I was super slow at actually writing the implementations as well, so the questions would take me like 30-45 min each. Eventually I started seeing patterns and noticing the different categories of problems and improved from there.

I use C++/Java due to competitive programming practice, but I do think that python is better in general.

Exactly... we still have very generous RSUs even after the Salesforce acquisition, not sure what Google is laughing about lol

Any idea how much time it takes on average to get back to a candidate @Tableau? I submitted my application with referral two weeks ago and haven't heard back yet
      Sep 4
    • Tableau macdows
Weird... it was pretty fast for me. I got a response from the recruiter 2-3 days after my initial application. I would suggest asking your referrer to inquire about your situation.

Wow, inspiring. How did you find the motivation to grind when you already have offers from FANG?

50% of my motivations vanishes the second I land my first decent offer

      OP
Eventually I want to start my own company, and the best way to learn how to do that is to work at promising smaller companies / elite unicorns, that's why I didn't stop when I got FANGs.

Sorry no referral use here but do you recommend grinding codeforces over LC to level up your prep? Or any advice on getting better at prep?
    Sep 4 1
    • Google LC4LIFE
      OP
It depends. CF has a lot of problem types that dont appear in interviews (properties on prime numbers, geometric/coordinate problems, etc). However, it definitely assists in being way more confident during interviews and overall problem solving abilities that may indirectly aid interview performance.

idk about SD but it must’ve been tough grinding LC in a place like SD? At least in SEA one wouldn’t be missing much staying in an LC all day.
