I am a PM who was referred to two product roles at Facebook/Instagram. My referrer said an interview was guaranteed, so I expected a recruiter would at least give me a phone call. To my surprise, they sent me an email saying they have reviewed my background and chose not to move forward. Is it abnormal to not get a phone call? I have a pretty strong background, so I’m not sure how to interpret this. As for next steps, do I apply to new roles? Try to get referred again? Any suggestions or insight would be helpful, as I would really love to work in Bay Area tech and am ready to make the transition.
Went through something similar. No call from the referral application. But then I later reached out to the recruiter directly who liked my resume and arranged a phone screen for me
I had a terrible candidate experience there. They say in the referral email that you MUST be called in 2 weeks. I ended up calling them several times and the senior recruiter said they are supposed to call you for every referral. Their recruiting is pretty terrible though.
No guarantees for most roles, definitely not PM.
It is never guaranteed. There is simply not enough people process all those referrals plus all the external candidates. So they have to do filtering.

Well, the prior poster is an asshole, but apart from that there could be many reasons. First unless your referrer is in HR, they cannot really know how it works. You could have been filtered out for one of many reasons, including they identified an internal candidate, or they postponed the project etc.
