Role: Content strategist Offer: $125k base + $43k equity, no sign on, NYC 10yrs work experience + a masters Thoughts? Thx!
Can you find out what level you're being offered? It's hard to say much without that piece of information.
That's awful.
Lol what should the offer be
At the risk of offending Tr3kkie again, I think you should be getting whatever product designers get. Yes, this is probably more than what “writers” make in NYC, but given how important and difficult good content strategy is, a TC over $200 would seem logical. Maybe even more, depends on the level they’re giving you.
What does a content strategist do anyways?
It’s a broad role, but they’re responsible for the tone, voice, and language across every touchpoint. In the most literal sense, they...strategize the content (not intended to sound snarky!) that goes into pages, documents, error messages, and so on.
So it’s more like a copywriter?
I’m an IC4 content strategist and this is exactly what I earn. I think it’s a good offer and rest assured it’s developed within the guidelines of a formula. I took it with the understanding that I won’t ever get more elsewhere. So far, having talked to other companies, my estimates have been confirmed.

Sounds like they’re taking advantage of the fact that writers are generally paid poorly, and that there are a lot of them in NYC. This is probably way more than you’d get anywhere else, except maybe a higher level creative director role in advertising. Content strategy is important, and should be treated accordingly, but this is definitely lower than what designers generally get for the same experience level. What are your thoughts?
Thanks. I’d be doing some UX design work too. What would designers with my experience level make? I have no idea what to think of the offer!
"Sounds like they're taking advantage of the fact that.." "this is probably way more than you'd get anywhere else.." Which one? Choose. Both can't be right.
