FB releases new statement about Definers. And yes, Soros funding was behind anti-FB protests in Congress.

It truly is worth the read. Honestly what fascinates me about this is the dozens of ways that a tech company that "moves fast" could find itself just as burdened by unforeseen problems as their end users.

They didn't start out intending to be such a participant in politics and public policy. But that's exactly what happened, which must come as a huge such a shock to them; they've got to be asking "How in the hell did we end up here?"

"Did we ask them to do work on George Soros?

Yes. In January 2018, investor and philanthropist George Soros attacked Facebook in a speech at Davos, calling us a “menace to society.” We had not heard such criticism from him before and wanted to determine if he had any financial motivation. Definers researched this using public information.

Later, when the “Freedom from Facebook” campaign emerged as a so-called grassroots coalition, the team asked Definers to help understand the groups behind them. They learned that George Soros was funding several of the coalition members. They prepared documents and distributed these to the press to show that this was not simply a spontaneous grassroots movement."

Curious - how do you measure “net negative for societies, globally”. Can you share some data points please? It’s probably true but I’d love see the data used.

I blamed the British or pointed out historically what had happened? I suppose you’re now going to scream fake news like our dear leader whenever you don’t like the narrative?

It is a fact that these atrocities has long be pervasive in Myanmar. It was naive on Facebook’s end to enter such a market and not prepare accordingly. This part I’ve made clear now multiple times.

But your claims as I’ve noted multiple times are primarily emotional and not fact based. This is the problem with the internet and tech in general. We’ve made it easy for people to be lazy and not read. The amount of rubbish people see and consume without fact checking drives me nuts. Not surprising that there are folks waiting to capitalize on these fears for their benefit. Good on them, I guess? I digress.

Sure, $40B sounds good. Let me know when Amazon ponies up for all the suicide and other crap that goes on in their warehouse. We’ll follow their lead. Again, Amazon is the last that should talk about caring for people.

If you have a personal vendetta against FB , fine. You’re entitled to feel how you want. If you care about truth, then you ought to heed the information I’ve shared with you and educate yourself. The choice is yours, seek truth or seek data that confirms your bias. Facts are facts whether you like them or not.

Their statement about Soros funding is incorrect. The groups involved have been active in the social change space and partnered with OSF for a while. Soros didn’t start funding them for the purpose of pushing back against Facebook.

Also, Facebook has been a net negative for societies, globally. It’s been positive for many people’s net worth, though.

I don’t have hard facts to cite. Right now it’s a gut feeling and I could be wrong. Facebook has been a great tool for many individuals/groups/communities. I won’t deny that.
