FB research engineer lowballed

Apple industry

Asking for a friend who doesn’t have a blind account. He recently got an offer from Facebook for the research engineer in AI role. TC offered was 185k which he thinks was a lowball. Would it make sense for him to negotiate up? He doesn’t have other offers.

His profile: 0 yoe, MS from top 3 school.

Please decline. Super lowballed, go work somewhere else. With zero experience you should be earning at least 1.5m a year and get a lambo as a signing bonus. Sorry this happened to your friend.

Super short-sighted. Get promoted quickly in a year. Get another 50-100k+ in TC. Don't sweat over an extra few thousand dollars with 0 YOE.

Overpaid. We have a glut of MIT and Stanford grads here. Top 3 degree is meaningless here - and this coming from a course 6 grad

Does TC include RSU and sign on bonus? Usually low base is made up by a solid sign on and rsus

185k includes base/rsu/annual bonus. Not sure how much his sign on is.

Does seem a bit low ball but like others pointed if your friend jumped straight to a masters after bachelors and is around 23-24 years old with 0 yoe then 185k is not too bad. He can ask for more but without a competing offer it would be hard for FB to raise

If he is from top 3 schools, then he could have at least known that getting competing offers helps?

Ask for 250k and accept whatever. That's a great position and will set him up for the a nice career.
