have a return offer from GS and a new grad offer from FB.

FB is offering more money but its in the bay area, GS is nyc.

FB offer is 118/150/25, GS is 100/35 signing/100 stocks (gave me this after i told em about FB)

NYC has women, bay area ive heard doesnt. bay area i need a car, NYC i dont. FB free food, NYC expensive food. Taxes similar.

How would you choose?

The PhD is a big deal. You could earn as much if not more in the right place at FAANG upper-middle management.

450k in 5 years of work exp is pretty solid but you are on knowledge path which is better. The BA-consultant at any management consulting company path is pretty brutal with their hours

Check out levels.fyi, I think the median person makes senior after 5 years which is about 350k. Experienced senior engineers make 400k+

Yes but they also had to work for like 10
Years mckinsey literally has only had to work for 5 years to reach to 450k granted PhD is work but still

I’d leverage that PhD and go FAANG and you’d probably go over $600k if it’s quantitative

FB by a long shot. GS is for people who can’t get into FB. Your raises and promotions will be crap and you’ll learn very little. Banks are not dynamic learning environments in tech.

Would only recommend gs if for very specific teams. In general, no. As new grad, you have to be exposed to new stuff, good managers, architectures, etc. most of the teams in gs deal with legacy systems, old tech stack, huge support volume and no pay. Just my 2 cents..

If you want to work on newish tech I'd recommend either Marcus or Marquee. Like any company, your manager will either make or break your experience and your growth.
      6d
    • Goldman Sachs Shield01
Marcus is good you can ask for San Francisco office if you prefer Bay Area or NYC if you prefer that. In general you should have both options.

My 2 cents: join Facebook, then in a year start looking for a transfer to NYC. If you’re unable to get a position in NYC after 1.5-2 years, switch to a new company there. Your career will be well established and you will be able to dedicate the rest of your youth to dating.

Go to Facebook and then leave after a bit. I live in the Bay without a car and am also a new grad. it's really not terrible. Anyone saying there aren't women here is stupid Lol. It's not like there's not enough for you to date or find someone. You can always go back to doing fintech enter but FB is a better name and you'll learn more in a better environment. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

I take the bart and most everyone I know does too. I love about a 7 minute Bart to work, and most other places I can get to with walking plus Bart in about the same time as taking a subway in NYC.

Even if you to on 2 dates a week you're looking at a few uber rides here and there. Nothing that would actually put a dent in your money

Unless he manages to find an Instagram SF team he will be working in Menlo Park which isn’t a great shuttle commute from the city. And while there are some women in SF there certainly are basically no single women in Silicon Valley.
      7d
  • Goldman Sachs DJ DSol
NYC is great and I think most young people prefer it to SF (I'm biased though), but Facebook is definitely the better career move and move for future TC and opportunities. Like others say, you can always try transferring to NY or jump companies after a year. Goldman isn't terrible but I guarantee you if you come here you'll spend most of your time wishing you were there.

Having had the same situation as you 5 years ago and having taken GS and not regretting it I might give you some devils advocate to this thread.

    It seems from the thread:
    FB 118 base * 4 + 150 equity + 25 signing bonus + 118*.15 *4 for bonus = 717k/4 years

    GS 100 base * 4 + 22 equity + 35 signing + 30 * 4 bonus (guess) = 577

    So 717-577= 140/4 years = 35/year

At your level, that doesn’t seem enough to make a difference if the roles are very different.

So short story, IMO, your role matters more. Some teams on FB are way better than back office GS for growth but probably have way worse WLB. At both places you can find WLB or great teams for growth.

So this is my long way of saying, we would need more info, you can DM if that helps.

I also prefer NYC > MP, so that shaped my view.

this is the worst calculation i've seen in a while. not taking into account refreshers and promos at fb which you will have to have in 4 years

    • Uber juryduty
You can’t predict which company will increase TC more. Both value different things and increase differently. An Investment Banking Strat will likely increase TC way more than many less impactful positions at FB.

I will agree that FB probably has a higher expected value but it’s also banking on equities staying constant or higher. While GS is all cash.
