Facebook = Trash when comparing with WeChat

Aug 31, 2018 27 Comments

I have recently been introduced by some Chinese friends the social app they use, called WeChat, and this open up a whole new world. After using it for a while, (especially during the last two weeks I spent visiting China) I found WeChat 500 times better. FB is really a piece of dumb shit.

The FB UI is a piece of shit, this is something you must admit. Come on, this company makes tons of money each year, can’t it hire some good designer to redesign its crappy interface?

What do you think of the FB vs WeChat comparison?

  • wechat is powerful mainly due to its insanely level of integrations in China. like holy shit it is an app you cant live without, you can pay, make reservation and do crap ton of stuff with it.

fb is a Social Media app, theres really no whole lot of comparison vetween the two.

The Chinese government and all the biggest companies in China share data and train their models using the conveniently unified and integrated experience you enjoy. Cool that it’s a nice experience and all, but I refuse to use an app that helps to train models for an authoritarian government that literally are maintaining “re-education” camps right now (Google “Uyghurs”)

I do not condone or agree with what the US government is doing with immigrant children. Equating what the US government is doing and the Chinese government is doing is just woefully misinformed and not backed up by facts though. Not to mention the scales are so completely different, the number of immigrant children estimated to have been separated was 6k on the high end while the estimated number of imprisoned Uyghers is on the order on millions. Not only that but with freedom of the press and freedom of speech we have been able to start the process of helping these children relatively quickly, while no such freedoms exist in China. And this completely ignores my point to begin with which was the fact that WeChat is literally giving their data directly to the Chinese government, with no PII stripped or anything and that data is being used to develop tools for oppressing their own people e.g. the social credit system and mass surveillance tools like facial recognition.

Again I totally don’t think the US is perfect and that never had anything to do with my point in the first place. I just think using services like WeChat contribute more to oppression than say, not using them.

@serialized - the world used to buy this US argument of being a good moral force and having the moral authority to lecture others on right and wrong, but not anymore.

We can all see how US acts when shoe is on the other foot wrt immigration, wars, respect for international treaties.

Tbh every single response has ignored my statements, and said something unrelated about the USA. It’s a very simple minded misdirection; like arguing with a 5 year old. You must obviously be a Chinese troll, and this is a waste of time. You can continue to yell “China numba one!!1” in Internet forums for the rest of your life and the world will keep on spinning.

Yes china is number 1 now and US also acknowledges that they can't defeat China anymore in wars near Chinese coast.

In a decade or 2, they won't be able to defeat China near US coast either.

Facebook has been regressing in the quality of its UI/UX with each new feature. It’s becoming increasingly cluttered and it seems like some features are done in a way to drive some kind of metric like clicks or views. As a user, many of these changes make my experience worse than better (floating video, forced full screen video, separated comments section, each comment telling me about the user’s relations to me in a really ugly way, etc)

Twitter and Facebook banned in China is because they don’t censor contents as the communism party wishes, not because they make better products so the Chinese companies fear competing with them.
