What about changing the role you have been in previously? I have worked in data infrastructure previously but done ML coursework in grad school- can I pick a ML based team?

Yes, but ML teams are very competitive, they typically look for lots of prior experience. You might have to convince a less in demand ML team to give you a shot.

Oh I see. By lots of prior experience do you mean similar experience at companies? Or even schoolwork would suffice? I am taking 2 project based ML classes this semester at school (CMU) -Grad ML class and ML infrastructure. And planning to take Deep learning, Data (and graph) mining and ML for Big Data next semester. Do you have any recommendations for any other courses that might be relevant for FB's ML teams (Ad ranking, search ranking, Oculus etc)

School work generally does not count for much, although CMU will carry more weight than most. Most ML teams are looking for industrial ML experience from well known teams. Current trend is definitely towards deep sparse models.

What about when the offer was for a specific team as a PM? Do you still go through the boot camp?

Yes, but it will be a shorter bootcamp if you were pre-assigned to a team.

Mutual selection. Sometimes the team rejects you too, but not quite normal.

Yes, you pick. One of the cool things about Facebook. And it definitely doesnt have to be what you did before.
