Facebook Data Scientist offer evaluation

May 12, 2018 21 Comments

I wanted to evaluate an offer for a Data Scientist role in Facebook with 5 years of experience after Phd. 160 base, 15% bonus, 200 RSU over 4 years. What is the maximum TC I can negotiate?

That seems like ds analytics; that team/role is not challenging for a PhD graduate, try ds infra or core ds for more technical/ research based data science role (and they both pay more)

Seems low for a PhD with 5 years experience. Both RSU and base. Where did you do your PhD from?

Purdue. Any reasonable numbers you suggest?

You have room on both base and RSUs. The bonus is locked in based on your level and it’s unlikely that our level is negotiable

Thanks! In your opinion, how much more RSUs it looks reasonable to ask for?

Hard to say without knowing how well you did on your interview. Is this for data science, analytics team? Or a different one?

I believe I did well. Yes, for the data science team.

Warning SQL, Python, R. Product Analysis. Unless you are joining as Research Scientist.

Huh? most of the research scientists I work with use sql, r, and python. What’s the warning?

Sorry, I meant less machine learning. Even research scientist use these but they quite often use or improve the machine learning algorithms.

Not all of them. Many are working building pipelines and analyzing results of algorithms rather than building their own.
