I heard they formulated yoe > 7 to be E5 so not sure why you got e4. Also conflict with the famous E4 cap of 160k + 300k +100k. You sure it's not a e5 offer?

Yeah if it's e5 there's some space to negotiate. New grads are expected to get to e5 within 3 years, they're just having higher bar when hiring experienced. Not sure why some ppl think e5 = google T5 or Amazon l6.

U mean E4, not a new grad, is expected to get E5 within 3 years (33 months precisely).

I guess I'm looking at "green", which is 17+20month. Slowest person I've known who MM twice got to e5 from new grad within 40 month. But I'm new here maybe I'm wrong.

Can L4 at Amazon get into E5 at F/G? With 6 yoe?
    Aug 14, 2018 6
    • Amazon gshjiu
6 yoe and still L4 at Amazon? You'll be probably on PIP. They try to push people up to L5 within at most 4 years.

Anyone in FAANG familiar with Amazon levels probably won't even take your resume if you have 6 yoe and still l4. Try hide your level when you interview.

Not all 6 at Amazon, only 2. Was down leveled when hired into amazon.

Everyone will assume you are L5 at Amazon. Just list "Software Development Engineer" on resume and don't bring it up.

Hope they don't ask. If they do, they often will just assume and don't correct them. Otherwise they are unlikely to interview you.

Can someone from FB confirm if FB E4 is equivalent to Amazon L5 and Google T4?
For a person with 5 yoe, would it be E4 or E5?
    Aug 14, 2018 7
    • Amazon megamorphy
I have 9 years of experience and got offer e5. E5 is amazon L6 and google T5. Its a lot easier at fb to get e5 offed though. Also this is similar to my e5 offer so its e5. 5 years of experience is minimum for e5 at fb I think.

FB's levels seem to be a bit more compressed than Amazon or Google. While there's a strong correlation in terms of scope of work between, say, E4 and L5/T4 or E5 and L6/T5, it's not absolute or exact...you'd probably get the "equivalent" level a bit sooner (and with a somewhat smaller scope of work) than you would the equivalent Amazon/Google level.

That's strictly with respect to scope of work, by the way. We all know Amazon pays the least of these on a level-by-level basis.

I'm heard a bunch of conflicting data points on this. From an internal promotion preceptive, from what I've heard, going between these levels internally is about the same at the three companies. The biggest difference is fb is way more willing to hire externally at e5 then google at t5. Which I don't think means the levels are lower at fb, just there are more willing to pip out bad e5 hires then google is. At least that's my two cent, which is probably worth about that.

    • Amazon / Eng eelj01
I'd agree with that, actually, especially regarding the bit about FB's more aggressive tendency to PIP out their own seniors. Amazon L6 (where I'm at now) is already starting to drift away from raw technical skill/contribution given the company's general predisposition towards soft/business skills in general (LPs and whatnot). One of the major practical promotion/hiring criteria for L6 also involves being an arbiter for the Amazon system and culture (which is the part of my job that I hate the most, because I love neither); net result is that it's all somewhat harder to objectively measure, and thus somewhat harder to hire and fire.
