Recruiter reached out regarding a product designer contract position at Facebook on the marketplace team. Does anyone have any insight into what it’s like being a contractor there vs. a full time employee? What are the odds of getting converted to full time? Role will be in Seattle.
What type of contractor? Janitor? Valet? Rocket scientist? Project manager? Finance? The point being the experience will vary significantly based on role and team.
Sorry. Added context. It would be for a Product Designer role on the marketplace team
How was it? Did you get the contract renewed? I am considering a contract role too with the same team. How is the WLB and working with the teams over there?
Contractors won’t receive all of the FTE perks and benefits by law, but at FB you will receive a considerable amount of them including free food, transportation, etc. Product Designer is highly desirable role at FB, so the chances of conversion if you do well is high. You would be working directly with engineers and product managers to build various apps. With that being said, a contractor position is a... contractor position. You can in theory get cut or not have your contract renewed. So it really depends on your personal situation and if it’s worth the risk. But overall the Marketplace team is doing well and growing, so without knowing anything about you, I’d consider it a good opportunity. Good luck.
Thank you so much for all this info. This is super helpful!
Haha go for it! I’ll be contracting on Marketplace as well! :)
How did the interview process work? Did you go through 3-4 different people? and then they all have to make a collective vote at one time? Or is it each person you speak to each time means you passed each one? I'm interviewing trying to figure out the process? I went through 4 people now waiting. Any estimate on the pay PD?
How was it? I am considering joining the same team. Are you still working there?

I got in contract role it wasn’t so great. They treat you like a second class citizens the managers. If your exact manager or mentor doesn’t like you it’s over they will cancel your contract. I have seen it.
So should one take it or not

Odds are usually good if your work is highly valued. It's much better to be a contractor at FB rather than G.
Thanks for the reply. That’s interesting I wonder why the difference in treatment between the two.
