Just don’t expect it to be a gateway to full time

So they don't convert if someone is good at their work?

Databricks is right, don’t get stuck on the contractor trap in the Bay Area. Reject contract work at all costs unless u have no option.

Contractors need to interview again just like you would be external hire. No added advantage for being a contractor. That said, use this time to network and understand skill gaps and prepare. When the time you are in is hiring, prepare well and apply.
