Facebook employee suicide

I do not work for Facebook. I am curious how many tech employees in FAANG like companies are in a similar situation. I am in one of these firms and I also feel stressed and my manager keeps pushing me to work even more with weekly deadlines. And I am on H1-B as well. I think that's not a big problem as even if I am fired I can find another job in 3 months. The real problem is bosses who only have incentive to get work done and little incentive to be nice to employees. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/10/15/facebook-employee-i-was-fired-for-talking-about-colleagues-suicide.html

If you get fired, don't you have to leave the US if on H1B?

Google qWVI33 OP Oct 16, 2019

You get 3 months to find another job .. and transfer visa

Apologies for adding to your stress OP but itā€™s 60 days https://www.murthy.com/2017/03/06/grace-period-nonimmigrant-workers-following-loss-of-employment/

You are currently at Google? GCP?

Not GCP...

Rest of Google is supposed to have great WLB. What are we missing?

Ugh. FB has tone deaf leadership and a business model thatā€™s unsustainable long term. See partners fleeing Libra, accepting political ads with untruths that other media outlets have rejected and terrible Portal sales. Avoid!

Good that you have you voice before acting.. Bring it to HR or have 1 or 1 with manager and look to join other team, if you are not enjoing what you are doing.. There is always a way out.. dont feel you are a slave to anyone

Did you try all other options to avoid stress? Changing teams etc

Google qWVI33 OP Oct 16, 2019

Going to do that after this year bonus

I contemolated suicide when the pressure was intense. I eventually got mental stability back by leaving the company and taking a sabbatical. But i bet some people don't have that option. No wonder they go through with it.

Google qWVI33 OP Oct 16, 2019

Which company did you work for when considering suicide ?

Microsoft RaptorGuy Oct 16, 2019

A company called "Life" for me personally.

It has happened to me once last year . The doctor I went for sleep issues talked about how to get over it. There was intense pressure at work for 5G and it was just getting to me because of toxic managers. I am on H1B . At one point I was considering to quit and use 60 days grace period to find job. When I was looking for job, I had a reality check that having a strong technical competency at current job means nothing to job market outside as I am neither a software guy nor CS background . Leetcoding from that point. Self taught most algorithms and data structures. Sometimes this can be more depressing.

Totally agree..! Being good at current job may not translate to doing good at interviews. I screwed up some of my online assessment cos of time factor šŸ˜

I mean all companies have some bad teams/managers. I saved myself by jumping ships, but I know I wouldn't want to be in this rat race another 10 years. I will save as much as possible in the next 5 years and then move to a different country where life is much slower. I want to do something meaningful in this world, not just code to make smarter phones.

Which countries do you have in mind ?

Wonā€™t the visa issue add to the anxiety level? If you are depressed at your job and you get laid off and your visa is expiring in 60 days, imagine the pressure.

Google qWVI33 OP Oct 16, 2019

I have to be always prepared for interviews and getting a job because of visa situation .. it adds to the stress level.
