I’m thinking about applying for FB Seattle next year. (Not Engineer) I heard that you are expected to be E5 or some senior level within ~ 3 years (if starting from E3 or E4) otherwise get kicked out or PiP. Is it true? Even Amazon doesn’t penalize people for staying in the same level for +3 years as long as your performance is ok.
Amazon doesn't penalize people?! You have a hard limit of 4 years although most people will start asking questions around the 18 month mark. Amazon's incentives are such that, if you don't get promoted after 2 years, you move on yourself. In many teams, the bottleneck was next level projects and management bandwith and as a result, many otherwise good people leave.
Hm that’s true...!
Facebook, Google and Microsoft have more/less automatic promotion until senior provided you things do things well enough. It's on management to make sure you are given the right opportunities. There are still politics but the company policy is they expect to keep you.
24 months for 3 to 4, and 33 months 4 to 5.
Thanks for answering. So if you pass the time limit, what happens? I know it sounds lame, just want to be mentally prepared :)
Someone answered below. I’d say apply and try your best to get an offer first. Way too early to worry about that
Yes. At the 33 month zone, you will be evaluated at the e5 benchmark. If you fail to meet that you will be on PIP
33 months from entering as E3?
No 33 from starting as e4. It's actually great since it acts as a forcing function for both the employee and manager, who will need to make sure they give you work that will let you get to an e5(or they would fail at their job themselves)
If you have been at Expedia for long, you are up for a shock. Prepare mentally, no matter what.
How’s Management? Are they supportive or more like politics and favoritism which I experienced a lot at big companies
If you’re willing to train to competency of the next level up and remain engaged, you have nothing to worry about. If you come into work each day only to go through the motions and new information goes in one ear and out the other, you have a lot to worry about.
The more I read about amazon on here the better it sounds. I feel like if everyone is on that hyper motivation level great shit gets done.
If you are not in a technical role, your role’s terminal level may not be IC5. Some jobs start at IC1 while engineering starts at E3. Just an FYI.
I’ve helped many people nearing that boundary. This is NOT something you should be worried about. It’s very rare and the only times I’ve seen people fail out through this funnel have some motivational problem preventing them from working or are absolutely horrible engineers that should not have gotten an offer in the first place.
