Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
I have an on-site interview with Facebook in a couple of weeks, and I had a preliminary call with the recruiter today where we discussed the interview process and preparation. He said I would have have 1 or 2 design interviews but that I'd find out the final interview schedule on the day of. Is this normal? The last time I interviewed there they gave me full details beforehand, so I'm wondering if their policy has changed or something else is going on here. Knowing what to expect helps guide interview prep. Is it a good idea to press them for more details?
There's no harm in asking them for as much detail as you can. All they can do is say no. Some advice: What I found from getting rekt on my onsite interview (only able to solve 4/6 questions), is that it's less about preparing for specific questions and more about learning how to answer anything.... So if you can set your interview far enough out where you can solve every leetcode problem or puzzle, I would recommend that. I tried learning specific ones, and on my interview i only succeed on the specific questions I was lucky enough to be asked. Had I practiced more broad concepts (in my case, recursion and backtracking) and figured out how to recognize when they applied to a situation, I would have passed the round I missed.
As a quick follow-up, how to get into the mode of identifying a pattern and applying one from the toolbox. Is it as much as leetcode?
I'm still learning. I say it's practice, finding shared patterns. I bought two algorithms books that are focused on the algos themselves instead of interview questions, and I'm hoping that helps. Part of it is that in our day to day work we don't really use this style of thinking, so we always have to relearn prior to interviewing. Now I'm just going to be doing puzzles and these types of questions daily to bolster up my skills before the next ones
