Facebook onsite experience

Recently had a fb onsite and the process was very enjoyable. This is my breakdown of how I did:

1) Career/Coding: It went great. Was able to tell about my experience in detail. Was able to provide optimal solution for coding part as well.

2) Coding: First part went great (optimal solution). Could not finish writing solution for second one. I had to get few hints from interviewer. I told my thought process based on the hint provided. I felt like she was not ready for second question. I might have finished first one bit too soon.

3. Coding: First part went great. Again could not finish writing solution for second follow up question. Few minor hints here and there.

4. System design: This one was interesting. I was expecting actual system design question but It ended up being product design type (did not prepare for product design). I did the best I could describing my approach collaborating with the interviewer.

It was really hard to come up with solutions for 2 questions in 40 minutes.
I definitely need to improve on that part.

I dont think I will pass the interview given the bar set by fb. But overall it was a great experience and will try next year. :)

Did anyone get the offer although they bombed the interview like me?

PS: I did not get any leetcode questions. I had never seen any of the questions before.

    • Congrats. Btw how long did they took to first respond you after your onsite.

I bombed one coding interview (or both?), but instead of rejecting me FB scheduled a follow-up phone interview. This phone interview was the same difficulty as the first phone interview, wasn't hard. After successfully answering the questions I received the offer.
But it is most likely because my system design and behavioral answers were good.

      What system design question?

One interview had exact question from Grokking the System Design Interview. Another interview asked to design something like a forum or classified ads (with 100k users per month at best, not millions).

  • I will tell you that I had the same interview breakdown. I did great on career/coding as did you, and system design I think I did very well also (problem I have thought about before). 1 coding I had an easy then a medium that took me longer than it should have to finish (I was confused on the question but eventually figured it out). I had a lot of hints along the way but this might have been a plus because there was a lot of communication. Other coding 1 easy 1 hard and I did not finish (its a pretty popular leetcode hard but not the most popular). I got partway through but it is a problem that has two steps/methods and I only got one done. I got an offer and apparently had "overwhelmingly positive" feedback.

    • You gave me some hope. I had the similar experience did well in system design and career/coding but stuck halfway in 1 coding which was leetcode hard, but was able to solve 2 medium in next coding round. Waiting to hear from my recruiter

I’m sure they were leetcode or related questions. Likely paraphrased.

Very likely. I may not have solved them yet. I was mostly focusing on EPI.

Could you share your product design question? Did they ask you to design API’s?

No. I mostly went through EPI. Did some top interview questions from leetcode homepage

Solving all the tagged questions would have definitely helped even if u wouldn't have got the exact question

Was this the NY office? Btw you get any dynamic programming? I heard FB banned it, and I’m prepping now, but the recruiter didn’t explicitly mention that to me.

I won't be surprised if you get an offer. It's okay if you didn't finish coding both questions. I didn't finish coding the second question in either of my interviews at FB.
    Also, getting hints is fine.
    Good luck!
