I am currently an E5 at FB (promoted this half) and have around 5 YoE. Facebook was my first job out of college. I was thinking to interview with Google to experience other FANG companies while I am still young and early in my career. How does Facebook compare with Google in terms of engineering culture and opportunities? TC: 280k, Bay Area
Google is way slower in terms of projects and growth as you will need g4 approvals and lots of design reviews, but possibly better wlb depending on team. You will learn engineering best practices there. Lower comp increases usually relative to fb as you progress. As a newer E5, you might be slotted at L4 or L5 depending on interview performance.
Interesting. You think FB’s practices aren’t good? What are G4 approvals? Thanks for your answer!!
I think FB’s practices are good too, but it is a different approach with more layers at google. And to answer your second question, more levels of code and xfn reviews Also from my experience, team switching mobility was harder at google
Just FYI, you won’t get L5 at G with 5 yoe. And tbh, you don’t really want it: the expectations are substantially higher. They can match or even beat your current E5 comp at L4 though.
How different are the expectations comparing the two? Thanks for helping!
L5s in my team lead year long projects and have multiple L3s and maybe even L4s working under them. they have been in the industry for 8+ years. I have seen some internally promoted L5s but I would not put them at same level as most L5s. I think the expectations are higher because L6 is a different kind of job with way more leadership and less coding. So you end up with crazy good engineers who are L5s but don't have/want to take leadership roles needed to get to L6. At least this is how I perceive L5s as an L3 🙂. Note that L4 is the terminal level at Google so you can stay L4/L5 as long as you want
You should consider Netflix. I was previously at Facebook too. E5
Hows WLB for you?
What time will you take to increase TC at E5 and how much can you earn max at E5 since you are internally promoted OP?
At say if get good ratings, I’ll need 2-3 years to reach max E5. Road to E6 is a different one, for sure I don’t have those skills yet.
Gold vs Silver. Just leave. You already said that the point is to get perspective. Nothing will be the same, but how bad could it really be at Google?
What’s the difference between an E5 and an L5?
How do internally promoted L5 compare with L5 new hires?
If you have been promoted more than once in a tech company, you have significantly lowballed comp. New E5's are paid 400k+
Yeah, it takes a while to get those E5 grants, and my new hire one just run out. That’s why I am looking around to see what my next steps will be.
Come to Uber. Our L4's make up to 350k
