Facebook vs Google vs Uber

May 7 29 Comments

Assume the salaries are more or less equal. Which one would you suggest: Uber SWE 2 / Facebook E4 / Google L4 (all three in San Francisco)? Please explain your answers.

I have a Ph.D. in CS and 3 YOE. I like software development and research. Also, architecture design but I'm not an expert in that. I am Canadian, single and 32 years old and career progression is also important to me.

As someone mentioned in a different thread - in a few years Facebook may not look great on your resume.

Facebook doesn’t have the best reputation these days. I’ve heard of engineering attrition at this company lately. May not be 100% true, but it may be a part of why it’s downvoted in this poll.

Yeah, that's very literally what everybody on this app said about Uber two years ago (actually, it was much worse for Uber--I remember threads started by people who claimed they would "never" hire somebody who "ever" worked there)...and given the poll results here, look where we are now.

It's hard to take the Blind community seriously, to be honest.

That's right, I am very curious to know exactly what are the good and bad reputations, so far there was only one positive claim about facebook.

I actually voted for FB. Having worked in both super-slow doc-and-process hell environments (albeit with excellent WLB) and fast, scrappy, startup-like cultures, I strongly preferred the latter. That’s me, though.

I mean, Microsoft is supposedly a country club where people get paid to do nothing, but have you ever talked to somebody who *actually* works within Azure? Google Cloud is likely to be similar. They're going up against a well-established and aggressive competitor in AWS. Anybody coasting in that space is going to get crushed.

If things are chill, it’s because they’re working strictly on internal projects/tooling or are supporting legacy systems in a mature and sagging market. Either way, these are the first to get cut when the company decides to lean out (this bubble won’t last forever) and your growth and learning will suffer accordingly. Simple truth—again, I say this having been there (including a disastrous year at a recently-acquired startup where months would go by without anything substantial to do).

Google isn't a utopia. Uber...well, I covered that earlier (it wasn't as bad as people claimed in 2017 and it isn't as good as they seem to believe now). None of these companies are without sin. Choose the one whose engineering culture most resonates with you.

Very detailed answer thank you. I'm trying to understand which one resonates me more. It's hard to find out from outside

Depends, but less than 3 yrs.
      Typically 1.5-2.

Your credentials make me think you're very smart. I think you could do very well in parts of Google that let you shine. Facebook also works on cool, complex systems with world class talent but the wlb is worse.

I went to fb from goog and love it here. You can control wlb during bootcamp - better than the other 2. A lot of people on here will blindly (ironic) vote google despite never having worked there

Never considered Uber or would ever consider Uber. Their work location is in tenderloin - negative interest in working there due to location and culture. Fb sf has the nicest office and is in FiDi. Goog sf is next to ATT park in an older office building and is pretty crowded

It depends on what org you have offers in each of these companies. Fastest career growth depends on how fast the business grows.
