Assume the salaries are more or less equal. Which one would you suggest: Uber SWE 2 / Facebook E4 / Google L4 (all three in San Francisco)? Please explain your answers.
I have a Ph.D. in CS and 3 YOE. I like software development and research. Also, architecture design but I'm not an expert in that. I am Canadian, single and 32 years old and career progression is also important to me.

Am I doomed now with a bad resume stamp?
I mean, Microsoft is supposedly a country club where people get paid to do nothing, but have you ever talked to somebody who *actually* works within Azure? Google Cloud is likely to be similar. They're going up against a well-established and aggressive competitor in AWS. Anybody coasting in that space is going to get crushed.
If things are chill, it’s because they’re working strictly on internal projects/tooling or are supporting legacy systems in a mature and sagging market. Either way, these are the first to get cut when the company decides to lean out (this bubble won’t last forever) and your growth and learning will suffer accordingly. Simple truth—again, I say this having been there (including a disastrous year at a recently-acquired startup where months would go by without anything substantial to do).
Google isn't a utopia. Uber...well, I covered that earlier (it wasn't as bad as people claimed in 2017 and it isn't as good as they seem to believe now). None of these companies are without sin. Choose the one whose engineering culture most resonates with you.
Typically 1.5-2.
Must be something irrational.
Never considered Uber or would ever consider Uber. Their work location is in tenderloin - negative interest in working there due to location and culture. Fb sf has the nicest office and is in FiDi. Goog sf is next to ATT park in an older office building and is pretty crowded
