Facebook vs Uber vs Slack

Hi All,

Can you suggest, for the Senior Software Engineer role, which of Facebook/Uber/Slack is a better choice? Comp wise, not a huge difference, though Slack is a bit generous in equity(which is not IPO like Uber).

Also if you can share some insights for the following points for comparison, will be helpful:

1) Culture
2) technical learning
3) career growth
4) stock (Uber vs Slack when goes IPO vs FB)
5) WLB

Please share the good and the bad. I can share TC for all 3, once I finalize one. Approx Range for TC 300-360K

Role: Sr. Software engineer
YOE: 8+ Years

300k/8yoe won’t be “senior” at fb. More like e5.

Both Uber and slack stock is paper now. If you leave before ipo it will remain paper.

Snow is wrong. 5 is senior. Maps to m levels. Multiple internal docs on this.

Internal docs do mention “senior”. I never said otherwise.

E5+ is almost 50% of workforce. If half of the people around you are “senior”... isn’t it just a feel-good ego-stroking label that devalues the word “senior”?

If you want to feel senior, glhf. The company knows that most ppl will never reach e6+, that’s why once you hit e5 you can stay at that level forever. And be called senior. So you don’t leave.

I start a company where I only hire fang e5+ - that's a 100% of my workforce. Are they all junior then? Either everyone in Facebook is using the term senior wrong or you are. If you want to redefine it to mean the top x% of a given org that's fine but don't be surprised if the wider audience doesn't magically know what you mean when you use a word with a widely agreed on interpretation.

Now John snow wants Facebook to stack rank seniors…

Why stop at “senior”? How about we call e5s Supreme Executive Senior Engineers? Doesn’t change the fact that those who never get to e6 are called “gray matter”, does it?

And I don’t need to stack rank anyone. Hidden levels already do that.

Uber will give you better WLB and could mean more in stocks. Facebook may have a hard 2018 as the bad news doesn’t seem to stop.

Both Uber and FB are good options though (don’t join slack)
